If you've been holding onto your original iPod classic for the last, oh... decade or so, then you're in for a pleasant surprise. Initially built from stainless steel and gold, somehow the materials appear to have reverse corroded into solid gold because those original ipods have been fetching thousands of dollars on the open market (also knows as ebay). The catch though, and this is a big catch, is that they need to be in their original factory sealed box. I know, it's unlikely you went to the effort to purchase yourself the best audio tech available at the time only to leave it unopened in dustry cupboard for a decade but on that off chance, you're about to make bank.
In 2014, a factory sealed 5GB first generation iPod Classic sold for $20,000. Think about that horrifying fact for a second, someone has enough disposable income so that they're dropping a midsized car's worth on a defunct music device for sheer collector's thrills. Awful. Reportedly even worse though, is the $90,000 someone spent on a 30GB U2 collaborative iPod which was originally sold for $349. Based on my understand of economics and U2's cultural value, I would have estimated this product to have a net worth of -$6,400 but obviously there's no accounting for Apple (and U2?) fanbois.
I guess we've known for a while now that Apple's design has inspired some fiercely loyal patrons but this is an interesting development. Dig deep through your hardware drawers my friends because if you've got that unbitten Apple then you're about to be one wealthy grocer.
