Song Premiere: GRRL PAL's 'Submarine'

  • Song Premiere: GRRL PAL's 'Submarine'
    POSTED

At the start of 2015 West Australian duo GRRL PAL set themselves a challenge - to release one song a month until the end of the year, meaning that they would drop 12 tracks in 12 months. It was a New Year’s resolution of sorts but unlike those who pledged to only drink light beer or to learn Mandarin, the duo of Jay Le Kat and Danny K did it.

Today we’re premiering the twelfth and final song from the band, Submarine. It’s an aquatic, ethereal pop song that feels euphoric - not in a big, epic way but in a whimsical sense. Euphoria is an appropriate feeling given that the release of the track is the mark of a triumphant achievement. Not only have they managed 12 banging tracks, they’ve also had a huge year on the stage from winning triple j Unearthed’s Listen Out competition to wooing punters at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND. Just recently they came in hot with a real contender for this year’s Hottest 100 teaming up with Slumberjack for Enigma.

Given that this year is only days from whittling away we thought we’d take the opportunity to look back on the year that was with GRRL PAL reflecting on their career highlights as well as some of the best or worst things that happened.

Hear Submarine along with a song a month retrospective below and then get all nostalgic with the pair after that.

Was there any point where you regretted embarking on one song a month in 2015?

Danny: Sooooo many times! There was just so much going on in the background… in terms of shows, people telling us not to put a song out every month, money (like getting them mastered and that), we emailed so many people we would spend days replying to them all…. but looking back I think it was definitely the right thing to do!

Jay: Yes! Especially when we starting playing shows over in the Eastern states half way through the year… it was so hard to organise ourselves and to find the time to release a new song on time!

Looking back, how has Grrl Pal changed since the beginning of 2015?

Danny: I think this has been a really great way to kind of find what we are trying to make, I like that it put pressure on us… it was almost like we were making these songs on some kind of cook show; we had a time limit to get them finished and they had to be done! I think it brought something different to the table, like not every song is 100% perfect & there was real sense of venerability in that.

Jay: I literally just had to do a little instagram recap, my hair has changed colour so many times hahaha! I thing the biggest change for me would have to be our live show. We got so much better throughout the year and we ventured out of Perth for the first time to play to other cities and we learnt so much from it!

Are there any favourites from the 12 or is that like choosing between children?

Danny: For me its DARE, I feel like that song has the sound and vibe we set out to make.. I really hope the next lot of stuff comes out like that! I just feel creatively we pushed it so hard you couldn't really find a song like it, I feel like its the most original thing we have made!

Jay: I agree with Danny, Dare is my most favourite song to perform live, the crowd always gets into it and its the easiest one for me to jump around to! I just really love it so much!

What's the plan for 2016? One song a month again?

Jay: Yep! Lots of writing!! Maybe a sea change? ** sly emoji face **

Danny: haha! We are going to be writing and building something to really work from, developing some more content! We are going to try and colab with some people and just see what comes from it!

Give me three of your favourite and three of your least favorite things of 2015.

    Danny:

    Worst

1- Frank Oceans album not coming out, but look Frank, I don’t want you to rush it, take your time xox

2- Perths internet is still slow in my area…. srsly NBN..

3- Kanye's album not coming out, but look Kanye, I don’t want you to rush it, take your time xox

    Best

1- tripping over to Splendor with an AAA pass *heart eye emoji*

2- All the cool achievements we made, like big sound, listen out comp, songs getting some triple J play & lots of other stations picking them up, getting to number 2 on Hypemachine! Seeing some hard work pay off!

3- Every Drake related meme/Dance video

    Jay:

    Worst

    1. Bleaching my hair too drastically and having half of it snap off my head… hence the intense layering and the fringe. Not Wow.

    2. QUIGLEY - wasn’t made this year but I watched it this year… its essentially a movie about Gary Bucey being turned into a white Pomeranian and having to do three good deeds to atone for his sins… wait, I don’t know if this is best or worst… its actually pretty great.

    3. That long island ice tea danny and I shared with friends at a 24 hr pho bar after listen out… we sent it back 3 times because it was definitely just coca cola… #worstcustomers

    Best

    1. Playing at Listen Out and BigSound amongst other awesome live shows that we played this year!! SO MUCH FUN, going to a festival as a punter is never going to be the same ever again.

    2. My SURPRISE 23rd Birthday party Danny organised, it was literally the best night of my entire life. So many happy tears.

    3. For the first time ever having a few people here and there at our shows singing a long with our songs!! Nothing can explain how amazing it feels to see people you don’t know mouthing the lyrics to your songs IT IS INCREDIBLE. LIFE MADE.
