If there is one thing Game Of Thrones has taught us (and there's not just one thing), you need to align dark forces to combat their dark forces and the darker the better.
Dark forces are aligned against us. They are called “curators” and we don’t know who they are but they put together “playlists” about nothing to “help” us choose our music. Playlists called things like “Upbeat Workout” that look like budget CDs used to look like and they have no style and no soul.
Let's be clear. These are not compilations, these are not mix tapes and these are not lovingly and carefully selected for a mood or a personality or for a specific person. No one owns them, no one cares about them and no one spent any care putting them together.
So we need to use our own dark forces to fight them and they don’t get darker than the legendary Moodymann. Yup that Moodyman - the mystery DJ out of Detroit who no one really sees but who drops science over and over again. The one who reminds everyone that house and techno started as black music and has real soul.
The Moodymann who used Sloppy Cosmic to remind people that more people died in Detroit last year than in Desert Storm, the Moodymann who said “Technologystolemyvinyl” and the Moodymann who dropped this funky fave of ours -
It took me a while to get to it but Moodymann’s DJ Kicks compilation is the sound of real music fans fighting back. It's great, it's deep. It’s a seamless listen and a beautiful mood throughout.
The song choices are perfect (as when it flows from FlyLo’s Tea Leaf Dancers to Nightmares on Wax's Les Nuits) and we love when he drops a Cody Chesnutt tune to remind us how dope The Headphone Masterpiece was. Cosmic but Cool.
He’s our musical version of GoT's The Mountain. And if it's done by hand to hand combat he’ll win. Easy. So buy it.
