    POSTED

Each week we take a look at some of the songs that are impacting the chart on Hype Machine, the internet’s music blog aggregator. As ever, we’re looking at the good, the bad, the surprising and the expected and this week has offered up a few shiny gems.

    INTERNATIONAL ACTION

Frankie Sanchez - Touch (Frankie Sanchez Remix) | HIGH POINT: #6
What is it Flume week up in here? Cut it out.

Junius Meyvant - Neon Experience | HIGH POINT #2

I'm pretty familiar with Junius because I've used previous songs of his in my maudlin family films but I'd never googed him and (spoiler) he's an Icelandic redhead. Not what I'd expected but still a lovely song and a nice voice and the sort of lyrics that belong in a sister act film.

Snakehips - Falling (feat Malika) | HIGH POINT: #5

It's feeling like a two horse race between Honne and Snakehips now to make the best produced pop songs on radio. It's taken a while but we're hitting the point where radio is starting to play songs by producers that aren't exclusively big room untzmen and the stage is set. This one has some tasty pop sensibilities but I think at least this time round (Snakehips is already 1-0  up with 'All My Friends', mind you) Honne has got the goods. Meanwhile, soundcloud only allows the preview on the Sony owned song below so the beginning of the end is upon us.

Peter Bjorn and John - What You Talking About (RAC Remix)  | HIGH POINT: #18
An RAC remix! I remember when the hype machine charts was literally 49 RAC remixes and an Arcade Fire single. I wonder now if the only people that care about an RAC remix are old idiots like me and Peter Bjorn and Johns product manager who is probably my age (literally 104 years old). (AMENDMENT: I just visited RAC's soundcloud, it turns out absolutely everybody still cares about an RAC remix)

    AUSTRALIAN TRACTION

GRMM - Something From Nothing | HIGH POINT: #1
Quinn XCII sounds like a white Chance the Rapper or at the very least a dreadlock sporting lentil as anything dweller (and not the sort who dine there out of deserved necessity). What I will say though, is that this is GRMM's best produced song to date. He's very clearly taking cues from our friend Flume up above but I love love those rolling bass sounds and though he's walking a beaten path, it's very listenable.

Flume and AlunaGeorge - I Remember | HIGH POINT: #1

This one hit me immediate with its combination of hook and subtle production. I've never been 100% on board the Flume train but this track is undeniable and interesting in that it demonstrates that Aluna George is an artist of unknown quantity. She's not a massive voice but there's something irrepressibly attractive about the way she sings and Flume does well to let that vocal hook sit fiercely front and center. I actually thought this was a Flume track but I've since learned this is one for her record.

Atlas Bound - Softer Still | HIGH POINT: #38

This is absolutely par for the Atlas Bound course, a producer vocalist duo from Sydney's Northern Beaches who are receiving far more love from foreign shores than from Australian media. I suspect that's because it doesn't feel like it'll fit into the Australian ecosystem very well - it doesn't feel right from Triple J or community radio and it's kilometres from commercial radio, so where does it live? The internet I suppose and thus - Hype Machine charts.

    Kllo - Bolide | HIGH POINT: #3

Absolutely, undoubtedly my favourite thing to grace the Hype Machine charts this week. Bolide is a massive step up for Kllo and even though Chloe's vocal are immaculate, it's not a vocal driven song. They serve a rhythmic function as much as melodic and the song is a dance track rather than a radio single. WHAT a dance track though. Simon Lam, you are a god among Melbournites.

Matt Black - Riot | HIGH POINT: #24

This sounds a lot like Troye Sivan for my money and that can’t be a bad thing for anyone who like $money$. Truly, it even feels like a Troye Sivan song, particularly in the verses. He's a fresh faced Sydneysider just now kicking off and I suspect his is a name we'll be hearing more of in the next year.

    Foreign/National - Tristesse | HIGH POINT: #26

This is a Melbourne act that Cool Accidents editor Maccy has been tipping as the next big thing for a long while now. Their records are beautifully produced to capture that late nineties and early noughties sound that bids me think of artists like The Bees or The Superimposers. They're on a pretty consistent run of excellent guitar-pop and I'm hoping hoping hoping that this track is the one that garners them some much needed radio love.
