The Record Store Day limited pop-up book edition of KMD’s Black Bastards album is a wonderful thing we like. The music (although put in the bin at the time) is great and the packaging beautiful.
A heavy card children’s book you want to hold and keep.
It reminds us of another project we loved being part of, a children’s album curated by Stuart Staples of the Tindersticks called “Songs For The Young At Heart” which was also made into a fat page children’s book.
It was hard to do, and we never got it into kid’s shops though we tried. But again it’s a lovely package that’s well worth getting your hands on if you can find one.
The music was good too. Staples assembled a bunch of the indie good and great (Belle & Sebastian, Lambchop, Jarvis Cocker) to perform nostalgic children’s themes from old kids TV shows, and it was weirdly magical.
Particularly lovely was this one by Bonnie Prince Billy, performing Puff the Magic Dragon which will give you a good idea of what it was all about.
In related news, we just found the next kiddie crossover contender thanks to illustrator Zak Tebbal translating Kanye West’s Bound 2 music video into a children’s book…
