Flying The Friendly Skies with Dappled Cities

You’d have to go all the way back to 1997, a time when Blur’s Song 2 and Chumbawumba’s Tubthumping were both vying top spot in the Hottest 100 (beaten by The Whitlams, with Smashmouth at #11) to witness the very first moments of Dappled Cities Fly's conception. Since then, they’ve had plenty of Triple J love of their own releasing five records and a swag of EPs and dropped the 'Fly' off their name but remained so at the same time. Now they’re back in the form of a new single ‘That Sound’. It was recorded in Byron Bay which somewhat explains the good-time vibes and mellow flavour of the thing and bodes well for the full length due later this year.

As well as lacing us with new music the guys were also nice enough to let us join them in the VIP executive flight lounge while they waited for their private jet to refuel and they hit us up with their "I Need To Catch a Flight Tonight" playlist aka "songs to listen to while you wait for your private jet"

Here's the scoop followed by the jams themselves and then a track by track breakdown -

If there's one feeling that I adore, it's that moment where you are sitting on the tarmac in your private jet, just chilling before you hit the skies. But what do I listen to when I'm feeling that glorious buzz? Try these tracks.

    Subways – The Avalanches

Beautiful throwback to the 2001 record. Makes me feel like 16 years passed in a sample-laden minute.

    Augustine – Blood Orange

New track, same vibe, awesome. As I’ve always said, once you’re onto something good, stick it in your mouth like a gobstopper and keep sucking - the layers will eventually taste new enough.

    Over Matter – Big Scary

Love what this suggests about the new record. I’m thinking Everything But the Girl meets a busking saxophonist.

    Oblivion – The Seshen

Good. Very good. In fact, very nice too.

    AFG – Sensible Soccers

Is that a good name or a bad one? Who cares - they clearly don’t care about anything if this effortless music is any hint of what they are like.

    Amerika – Liima

I don’t know who these guys are but I think they are from Iceland maybe and anything from Iceland right now reminds me of the soccer. And that commentator’s joy. Non-sensible soccers. Obviosuly this song makes them think of America. OR Amerika, wherever the hell that is.

    Blackstar – David Bowie

How the hell did this guy save such awesome stuff for his swan songs!

When I See You Again – Canyons (Duke Dumont Remix)

What a lovely voice. Husky. Like a throaty boat. On a lake of honeysuckle.

    Downtown – Majical Clouds

This is a good one to listen to as your private jet takes off and you look out over Botany Bay with that mix of "I'll miss you" and "I've never stayed at the Novotel: I wonder if it's all class or a bit shit”.

To coincide with the new release, Dappled Cities have announced two shows: Northcote Social Club, Melbourne on Friday July 15 and Oxford Art Factory, Sydney on Saturday July 16. Tickets for which can be nabbed via the band's website.
