'Owen Down The Rabbit Hole

    POSTED

Coming off the back of a sold out tour supporting SAFIA, as well as having just wrapped up his debut at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon in the Big Apple, Melbourne’s Owen Rabbit isn’t showing any signs of slowing down (or…… clearly having any need for sleep).

To add to his busy schedule, interchanging flights and jetlag, we threw the electronic producer some questions and discovered (some to our amusement) that not only can he make some sweet tunes, but he’s also somewhat of a Warhammer champion?

Q: Your track Holy Holy has over 71K plays on Spotify + over 50K Soundcloud spins… Congratulations! …… So how did you find the crowd’s reaction to new material during your support tour with SAFIA? As impressive?

Thanks. You couldn’t fit 71 thousand people in a jar of jam unless they were very small. Then they could all listen to the song at the same time. That’d be a world record. I hope people like my music. Everybody just wants to be loved.

Q: So back to the tour with SAFIA… any highlights? And who else would you love to tour with if you had the opportunity to, and they don’t necessarily have to be alive?

They’re nice boys. I had a fun time. I liked playing The Corner Hotel. I’ve wanted to do that for a long time. I would like to tour with Bjork. I think she would be nice and I could help her carry her strange instruments. If you know her please send her a note. What a time to be alive.

Q: You’re heading off to New York this month to play at the CMJ music marathon ….what tips have you been given about your showcase, have you been given the low down of the DOs and DON’Ts for your first time?

I’ll just close my eyes and hope for the best.

Q: The question is inevitable….but when are we going to see an album from you? Any scoops you can give us on the tracks or any collaborations in the works? The best bit about making the albums for me is hearing of the recording sessions…..sometimes the recording process causes some artists to go bat shit…. any of that going down in the rabbit clan?

You can be all sorts of things. You can get frustrated or find something lovely. I don’t like people telling me what to do. When I can make music I get to keep secrets with myself and nobody has to know. I get by though. I’ll keep writing for you and let you know when it’s ready.

Q: I was checking out your Triple J Unearthed profile and was intrigued by the list of your musical influences which include The Cure, Miles Davis and even Aphex Twin….Do you consider yourself musically eclectic? And do you allow your eclectic taste to present itself in your own music, or are you very focused on a particular sound

I try not to over think it. I like lots of music. I like to make music with my hands. I remember lots of lovely warm experiences at raves and squat parties that made me love electronic sounds. Staying up late on a school night listening to Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis was a good fix to suicide Tuesdays.

Q: And lastly finish this sentence. The one surprising thing people don’t know about Owen Rabbit is…..?

I am a level 10 at Dance Dance Revolution.
I have Dungeon Mastered many successful campaigns.
I won a Warhammer tournament at age 10.
I won a hot cross bun eating competition at age 8 and I bought myself a Spiderman with the spoils.
