If you scroll deep through the musical sections of the interwebs, you will come to one general consensus: Charli XCX is the future of pop.

It’s a big call to make, but we are happy to back it up, because, well… she is.

But for the people who are still unsure on why she has merited that status, we have decided to do some investigating. Cool Accidents took to the streets of Sydney to speak to her fans that were lining up at Oxford Art Factory from 2pm (!!!) for her secret intimate show to find out why they think that is and we discovered a few major things.

    1. She’s revolutionising pop

After having major chart success early on in her career, Charli XCX is focusing on just making music that she loves and in this she is embracing and leading the PC movement in the pop world which her fans are ALL here for.

“She is just doing what no other artists are doing. She’s embracing things that people shun like auto-tune, synthetic production and obnoxious lyrics, and she’s making it palatable and taking it seriously,” a fan called Oscar Peterson told us.

“I stan Sucker but she’s evolved so much from then. She’s super into the PC scene and has introduced that genre to me and I dig it," shared Grace Murphy.

LGBTQI+ fan Jarrah O’Connell added, “She embraces the LGBTQI+ community, and it’s genuine! She talks about things that happen in our community, makes jokes about poppers and is supportive in a big way unlike other artists who just queer bait." Another, Thomas Moy, explained, "It’s not the normal whiny love song. Her whole message is to be you, do what you want, party, drink. And that’s why a lot of her fanbase is gays because that is gay culture too. it’s that sentiment of being your authentic self at all times.”

“It’s her style, her fashion and it’s the new age sound that she’s trying to bring with the likes of SOPHIE that really attracts me to her. I love computer noises and I love that she’s embracing that," said Jaye Drew.

    2. She’s creating a platform for new artists

A lot of people find their new artists through the likes of Spotify, Apple Music, word of mouth and Twitter, but a lot of Angels are discovering new music through Charli’s music. She collaborates with a lot of underground artists like Kim Petras, Pabllo Vittar, CupcakKe, Dorian Electra, Brooke Candy and ALMA which has introduced them first hand to her dedicated fanbase.

“She’s created a big family of people through collaborators and she's put a spotlight on people that I hadn't heard of before and absolutely adore now like Kim Petras, Dorian Electra and Pabllo Vittar,” a fan called Lawson Wrigley admits.

    3. Drag Queens LOVE her

This doesn't really come as a major surprise to people because her music is so playful and because she’s been a proud ally of the LGBTQI+ community since day one, but drag queens REALLY love her.

Sydney queen, Itssnosecret, explains that it’s her genuine appeal that attracts her to her artistry. “She references so many things that are relatable to the gay community and she just looks sickening. She’s a natural beauty What is there not to love?” she exclaims.

Her music also stands out for Itssnosecret and her friends Nova Hudson and Angel Cupcakes who all admit they use her music to lip synch with their performances. “My favourite songs to perform would be Breaking Up and Porsche,” she admits.

But this isn't the first time she’s seen Charli, as she retells her encounter with the mega-star for her Pop 2 show in Sydney last year. “She pulled me up on stage and I had my ass out in a jockstrap, twerking for her and she was smacking it,” Itssnosecret laughs candidly.

    4. She evokes serious debates

While Charli was debating about tea on Sunrise, her fans were debating on the streets over what song was better; the infamous Track 10 or the newly released Blame It On Your Love which reimagines Track 10 with the help of Lizzo.

While Grace Murphy, Jarrah O’Connell, Thomas Moy, Oscar Peterson, Lawson Wrigley, Bradley Anderson and Jaye Drew all admitting that Track 10 remained iconic, Itssnosecret, Nova Hudson and Jack Crossing were not afraid to say Blame It On Your Love was in fact their fave.

With only a days notice after the ballot for the tickets were drawn, it was kinda surprising how many interstate fans made the trek to Sydney for this one off event. But it was the exclusivity and intimate nature of the show that appealed as this was something unique and exciting. Oscar Peterson from Melbourne has seen her six times while Bradley Anderson from Brisbane has seen her five times and they didn't want to miss out on another opportunity to add to their tally of seeing their queen.

With so many well thought out and sophisticated answers, Mackenzie Meyer decided to put it simply for us.

“She is the future of pop because she recorded Unlock It." And honestly, that’s all the convincing we need.
