Mason Dane reps Newcastle in everything he does, and his appearance on triple j's Bars Of Steel caught the attention of none other than Silverchair's Daniel Johns, who Mason called the "Newy GOAT".
Mason's appearance on the recurring triple j segment showed off a different side to his recent EP Chasing Home, which leant more into pop-inspired melodies while exploring the idea of home. However, he can also rap his socks off, and he's proved it during this appearance, even shouting out Silverchair by rapping "I'm from the city where it's Silverchair but I want gold".
Rapping over two beats made by frequent collaborator Liam Thomas, as well as a beat made by Oliver Cronin, Mason got a lot off his chest, talking about everything from recent success to a heartfelt tribute to a recent lost relative. Each beat gives him the chance to do something different, from showcasing a rapid-fire flow to a more laid-back delivery.
Writing on Instagram, Daniel Johns applauded the performance, writing "NEWY! 🙏" Daniel Johns is preparing to release his new album FutureNever later this year, and between the two of them (and a host of other talented artists), there's going to be a lot of great music coming out of Newcastle in 2022.
