Day Of The Dead

    POSTED

2009 was a very special year in music. Animal Collective were still releasing bearable records, Anohni was called Antony and the Johnsons, Bon Iver followed up his cabin records with that (pretty great) Blood Bank EP, Dan Auerbach dropped a red hot solo record, Miley Cyrus was still Hannah Montana. Even Jason Schwartzman was doing the band thing and remarkably well I might add. Guitars were still present in plenty of what you were hearing on the radio and the rise of the producer-vocalist hadn’t yet overwhelmed community radio.

So from within this context was birthed a quite excellent compilation record called Dark Was The Night. It was the 20th in a series of releases aimed at raising money for HIV/AIDS awareness organisation Red Hot whose (dating as far back as 1990) and it was as if 21 year old me had been given free reign to custom curate their own blank cheque mixtape with a mandate of slapping together artists for excellent collaborative tracks to boot. Just bask in a few of these for a second: Dirty Projectors + David Byrne, Bon Iver, Feist + Ben Gibbard, The National, Grizzly Bear, Yeasater, Antony + Bryce Dessner, Iron & Wine, Sufjan, Spoon, Arcade Fire, Beirut, My Morning Jacket, Dave Sitek, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Yo La Tengo, Jonsi, Andrew Bird, Conor Oberst…

An absurdly well curated batch. Well friends, it’s happening again.

Announced this week was the advent of a new Red Hot compilation, this one also doubling as a Grateful Dead tribute record. Prep yourself: The War On Drugs, The National, Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, Lee Ranaldo, Stephen Malkmus, Perfume Genius, Anohni, Angel Olson, Tallest Man On Earth, Local Natives, The Walkmen, UMO, Real Estate, Fucked Up, The Flaming Lips… And I’m barely scratching the surface here. I’m not particularly excited to hear Mumford butcher ‘Friend of the Devil’ but I’ll wear that small cost if it comes in the wake of this great profit.

The 59 track record is spearhead by the National’s Dessner brothers and is out May 20 via 4AD. Full tracklisting below.
