Earl Sweatshirt spent the pandemic writing new music, and he's getting ready to release a snapshot of the period to the world. He's announced that he'll be releasing the 10-song project Sick! on January 14th, 2022, and we're looking forward to hearing it.
To mark the occasion, he's released a new single, Tabula Rasa, featuring hip-hop duo Armand Hammer, as well as production from The Alchemist. It's a slow-burning track that sees Earl hitting listeners with a laid-back flow, and it's instantly captivating.
Speaking about Sick!, Earl states, "Sick! is my humble offering of 10 songs recorded in the wake of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic and its subsequent lockdowns. Before the virus I had been working on an album I named after a book I used to read with my mother (The People Could Fly). Once the lockdowns hit, people couldn’t fly anymore.
"A wise man said art imitates life. People were sick. The People were angry and isolated and restless. I leaned into the chaos cause it was apparent that it wasn’t going anywhere. These songs are what happened when I would come up for air. Peace and love to Zelooperz the enigma, the Armand Hammer, and my good friends Alchemist and Black Noi$e. Peace and love to u."
The announcement of Sick!, as well as the release of Tabula Rasa, follows Earl's recent single 2010. Both are set to feature on Sick!, and judging by both tracks, Sick! is set to be a project that'll resonate with lovers of lyrical hip-hop.
