    East Av3

Adelaide hip hop trio EAST AV3 seemingly burst out of nowhere overnight, simultaneously blowing our minds and piquing our interest with early cuts like Riding Through The Fire and Cardio Audio.

Their bombastic and effortlessly cool sound calls to mind the flow of BROCKHAMPTON, but unlike the famous hip hop boy band who formed out of members from an online Kanye forum, EAST AV3 go way back and their close dynamic is their secret weapon.

The trio - comprised of members Nic Flare, Kane Trop3z and YOURPAPASENSEI - met at school, bonded over creative ventures like photography at school, then moved out together to a house on - you guessed it - East Avenue.

Turning heads in the industry following the recent drop of Le Labo, as well as finding themselves on the top five of triple j's DIY Supergroup competition, today the band announce their debut RUGRAT$ EP, along with the EP's title track.

We caught up with the band's producer Nic Flare to get the lowdown on all things EAST AV3.

Tell me about you guys, how did you guys meet, I hear you’re all high school friends?

Yeah, that’s it. We went to school together from like, Year 8? And then just made music together as a fun thing to do, a bit of a hobby. We got a bit more into it after school finished, we moved in together on East Avenue, hence the name! That’s when things really kicked off, now we’re giving it a bit of a go. Our first song Riding Through The Fire came out last year, but I’d say we’ve been doing it together a year or two before that just at an amateur level.

There's so much chemistry within the band, it really shows through the music.

I think that’s probably because we’re genuine friends.

So do you guys all produce and all write lyrics; is everything a super collaborative experience?

We all have roles I’d say. I produce out of the group, the other boys all write their own lyrics for their verses. We normally just come into the studio with a beat all ready and done, we start working on it there and the boys write their verses and we try and pump it out in that session.

Musically I hear a lot of influence from BROCKHAMPTON, how do you guys cook stuff like Le Labo up, does it start with a beat or lyrics first?

Le Labo was our “standard” sort of way to run the session. The beat was already done when we got in, that one came together really fast actually. We found all the songs that we think are gonna be pretty good normally happen very quickly. The beat was done and the boys wrote their verses straight away, got in there and recorded it. One of our good friends was wearing this Le Labo fragrance, and we were like, “man that’s the best scent we’ve ever smelled in our life,” so the name came in after that.

I was literally going to ask if that song was about the luxury fragrance. I find it hilarious that it is. So you’re from Adelaide, what’s the hip hop scene like there? Obviously you’ve got Hilltop Hoods out of there, but you guys aren't exactly doing the same thing as them.

It’s pretty good, it’s starting to pick up to be honest. There’s a bit of scene building, it’s still early days I’d say. There are a few artists there coming up – everywhere in Australia seems to be building at the moment. That’s good for everyone and good for us, there’s heaps of artists giving it a go. Hopefully it continues ‘cause I’d love to see a big scene up here, especially artists staying in Adelaide and really repping it. There used to not be a whole lot of opportunity so artists would move to the rest of Australia or overseas, but I think if a lot of artists can come up here and help build the culture it could be a really cool place. It’s so much cooler to stay and rep your hometown.

You’re super fresh on the scene, a few shows under your belts, what’s the big picture, pie in the sky stuff? What is the dream collab and what do you guys wanna achieve in the next two years that’s gonna make you ring your mum up and go "MUM LOOK WHAT WE DID!"

Good question! I think we’d love to keep playing shows, we had some things booked in which unfortunately aren’t going to go ahead because of this virus, but everyone’s feeling the pressure of that. Dream collabs! I mean, if you’re shooting for the stars and it’s the biggest of all time we’d love to work with a Kanye or someone, but that’s everyone’s dream I guess.

Do you like the new Kanye stuff, Jesus Is King?

Not as much. If we could work with 2008 Kanye, that’d be good. We’d all love to play Splendour to be honest, growing up and seeing all the acts playing there. I’ve actually never been. We were always talking together about wanting to go on a little trip so that would be a huge trip if we could all go and play there! That’d be a big bucket list tick-off.

I love your music video and social visuals too, are you guys all super creative?

Yeah, most of all the visuals and merch stuff we all do ourselves. All the images we take ourselves. We had help for the Le Labo music video, we worked with Helm who are film makers out of Adelaide. So most of the stuff is ourselves! I think that’s why we became such good friends, at school we were always trying to do creative stuff.

Now tell us about your new song RUGRAT$, which is a bit of darker sound to Le Labo and Cardio Audio, what were you guys inspired by when writing this one?

RUGRAT$ was the first song we made so it’s fair to say we were probably feeling the darker vibe at the beginning before we made the songs that you’ve already heard. It was cold and we were working in a studio underneath a club in the Adelaide CBD, it was a bit like a dungeon. We had a lot of fun though!

Tell us the story about why it’s called RUGRAT$ – did you all watch the show Rugrats when you were younger or is it something you call each other?

It was more just a funny comparison between us and the show. We’re young and like to mess around, not exactly sure where the name came from but it just stuck and seemed to suit the song.

If you had to describe your upcoming RUGRAT$ EP in 5 words what would they be?
