Five Musical Christmas Presents From 2012

Just five little treats from us here at Cool Accidents to you to say thank you for a good year and a great Christmas. Bottoms up to a better year to come and presents out the ears these holidays. Kicking things off…

Firsly, it’s DMX singing Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer and I’m almost entirely sure it wasn’t meant to be hillarious. This dude did way to much crystal in his hayday and it’s left him looking and sounding slightly off, all the time. X is still probably “gon give it to ya” but maybe a little slower and more confusingly than he used to.

As recently as this morning The xx gave us this gem. A remake of Wham!’s seasonal classic ‘Last Christmas’, it’s quintessential xx. Dig.

Mariah Carey hasn’t fallen off just quite yet and proved that recently with her appearance on Jimmy Fallon. She did a rendition of All I Want For Christmas with The Roots (and Fallon himself) and showed us why her Christmas record has sold over 146 billion units. Fact. Also, how about that for a 42 year old woman, AMIRIGHT!?

Sufjan Stevens did his usual thing, which is to say he did something exceptionally ridiculous and dropped a further five Christmas records to compliment his existing five. This is my choice cut from the collection that is as diverse in lyrical content (From Christmas Unicorn to Alphabet St) as it is in style. There are moments where he reaches the most spasmodic electronic heights and other, quieter folksy moments. The below tracks sits right in the middle.

Big Boi read The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (in it’s entirety) because you know, he could.

And then this, the perfect summary of all the above. Tongue in cheek yet still undeniably awesome, Sufjan collaborated with a boatload of rappers to make his Christmas Hip-Hop Mixtape, the awesomely titled 'Chopped and Scrooged’. This kills. Merry Christmas.
