Hayden James - Taking The Screech Out Of House One Luxurious Beat At A Time

You got to hand it to the Swedish House Mafia. They patented their high pitched screech, dropped a global Number One with a clip that erased memories that Led Zeppelin ever played Knebworth and then got the hell out while the getting out was good. That left us with everyone from Gaga to Im riding the screech until the time when it has become so common place that it will be underpinning the next Good Guys ad.

But as Newton once told us, for every action, you get an equal and …well, you know the story.  And so we are seeing  the return/rise of a more pure, nay demure, form of house that is taking us back to the basics of why we ever bothered to be bothered about “dance music” in the first place. From Disclosure to Rufus vis Solumun and Maya Jane Coles, the ‘less is more’ aesthetic is returning in full effect.

And I’m here to tell you that Future Classic wunderkind, Hayden James, is not just surfing that wave. He is creating a unique break all his own.

You may well have heard his debut joint, “Permission To Love”. Triple J flat out adored it. UK dance bible Mixmag gave it a very smart 8/10 (Bible in the sense that they worked out that Sasha might have been a god or a minor deity of some sort many years ago.) The Mixmag reviewer revelled in the “…warm, sensual synths and cool choppy effects” that James adds to his vocals. And more than 500,000 Soundcloud listens to date could hardly be wrong.

Well, James has backed it up with the release of his eponymous EP. “Hayden James” is a 20 minute day spa for your ears with a happy ending thrown in if you really need it. Swedish shrill has had to move aside for a luxurious layering of beats that wrap around you like a pair of killer sunnies setting you up for a summer to remember.

Proceedings kick off with the matter-of-factly titled “Beginnings”. A shimmer, a welcoming chord bed brimming with optimism and an inviting croon sees you off on your Future Classic cruise. Hayden’s object of desire comes into focus on “Lay Down”. Whoever she is, he is her biggest fan ever. The woozy music matches his light-headed need to lay down to see her face watching over him so he can see “..truth from those eyes”. Makes a change from “PARTY PEOPLE!!!”, don’t ya reckon? “Permission..” washes over you when the shore has become a distant memory. Perfect. “No Time” sounds like what Vangelis might come up with after a crash course called Deep House 101. You are really driftin’ now.The voyage comes to an apparent end with the shush of “Embrace” but you know things are just getting started. This isn’t over. Not by a long shot.

The EP stands as a primer for more developed and detailed songs to come. It certainly provides a template for what promises to be a punchier live experience.

Why not see for yourself? Hayden James unveils his live deal at the Valley Fiesta in Brisbane on 23 November, followed by The Plot in Sydney (14 December) and Melbourne (15 December). Come prepared with a note from home that contains your permission to love and embrace this luxurious new talent.
