It's no easy task following up what is considered to be one of the greatest records of our time but that's exactly what's about to happen. Kendrick Lamar is rumoured to be dropping the follow-up to To Pimp A Butterfly on Friday so we thought it was time we collated everything we know about what is sure to be one of the most talked about albums of the year.

    It's Finished

Schoolboy Q, who is on the same label as Kendrick Top Dawg Entertainment, confirmed on Snapchat that the album is done. He put up a picture playing Humble on his phone and said that he's got, "da whole album." Whether or not he features on it is another question.

    It's Probably Out This Friday

At the end of The Heart Part 4 Kendrick raps, "y'all got 'til April the 7th to get your shit together." This could mean anything, really, but most fans online believe this is when K.Dot is going to drop the album. It's unlikely to be simply a new track either because he's already dropped two of those. It would be perfect timing too given that he's headlining Coachella just one week after.

    Religion Is A Central Theme

In an interview with the NY Times Lamar spoke openly about the record's themes for the first time, saying that he's going to be focussing on, "God".

"To Pimp a Butterfly was addressing the problem," he said.

"I’m in a space now where I’m not addressing the problem anymore. We’re in a time where we exclude one major component out of this whole thing called life: God. Nobody speaks on it because it’s almost in conflict with what’s going on in the world when you talk about politics and government and the system.”

He further said that the album is, "very urgent."

He Could Try Not Rapping On Some Songs

Last year, in an interview for GQ with legendary producer Rick Rubin, Lamar said that he would consider making an entire album of not rapping.

"Yeah, I think I got the confidence for it," he said.

"If I can master the idea and make the time to approach it the right way, I think I can push it out."

Given the tone of The Heart Part 4 and Humble, it's unlikely that the album is going to contain no rapping but it doesn't mean we shouldn't expect some singing.

    Rick Rubin Could Be Involved

Kendrick and Rubin had never met before the GQ interview but it ended with the pair going into the studio together to record. There's been no follow-up on what happened during those sessions but it wouldn't be surprising if Rubin ended up having a part in the album. After all, his hip-hop credentials include Kanye West, Jay Z and Beastie Boys.

    It's Hard "Shit"

Producer Syk Sense isn't on the album but he told YouTuber EricTheYoungGawd that he's heard some of the beats that Lamar was considering using for the album and they're amazing.

"It's not like the jazzy tape you would think, its like... fucking Memphis. It's LA, it's Memphis," he said, suggeting that Kendrick is moving away from the jazz stylings of To Pimp A Butterfly.

"It's on some different shit. I don't even know how to explain it. I can't wait either to be honest, because Kendrick is such an elevated mind, you just never know."

He also said that it's, "some of the hardest sh*t that I’ve ever heard."

Mike Will Made-It Produced Three Songs

Mike Will Made-It produced Lamar's latest single Humble and he's also got two others on the project, as he told Power 105.1. He revealed that he's got three production credits in total on the album, the week after he dropped his own song with Kendrick on his Ransom 2 record titled Perfect Pint.

    He's Out For Blood

Kendrick is at the top of his game but it seems he wants to make sure nobody is coming for his throne. On both The Heart Part 4 and Humble, he's made apparent disses aimed Big Sean. “Hoe, Jay Z Hall of Fame, sit ya punk ass down,” he rapped on Heart Part, seemingly taking a stab at Sean's Hall Of Fame record, after calling him, "a scared lil bitch.” Then on Humble he uses Sean's phrase "lil bitch" and raps, “My left stroke just went viral/Right stroke put lil' baby in a spiral.” His left stroke is believed to be Heart Part while the right is believed to be Humble. The strokes are said to be headed straight towards Sean.

It's Going To Be The Album Of The Year

TDE head Anthony Tiffith said so.
