    Dear One Directioners,

Like me, you are probably counting the sleeps at the moment. And no, it’s not because school holidays are around the corner its because its only 5 more sleeps till the most exciting teen sensation currently sweeping the world, will swiftly sweep our fair shores. Yes, that’s right Harry, Niall, Zayn, Liam and Louis will hit Oz next week to play three shows, the Logies, do a bunch of interviews and undoubtedly be screamed at by hundreds of you. Now most grown-ups will always diss boy bands, I however, love them. I have loved them for many a year and will undoubtedly love them until the day I exit the earth. As I’m getting older it’s harder to pass a comment about one member being cute without sounding like some sort of cougar on heat, and boy, both you and I know, One Direction are cute. But for me they are symbols of everything that is exciting when you are a teenage girl. Good dressers, pretty faces, smart moves and just enough knowledge to imagine what they would be like as your perfect husband (don’t forget to practice your new signature with his surname) but lacking just enough information that you don’t know how mean or horrible they could be. They are the ultimate boyfriends, easy to love, easy to look at and hard to break up with as they don’t even know who the hell you are. I miss those days Directioners, so promise me you have as much fun as you can following the boys around the country.

Having practiced Mrs Mardi Michael when I was a young thing as I was obviously going to marry George Michael, I’ve seen the Robbies; Justins and Wahlbergs come and go. I have of course loved them all and in return they all gave me one very special gift – which was their music. Wham’s “Make it Big” was the first album I ever owned, and when George promised never to dance again because of those guilty feet, I believed every heartfelt word – and of course, he was singing those words to me. Just the same way Harry Styles is telling all of you that “you don’t know you’re beautiful”. I didn’t feel the urge to scream or cry, I just felt the urge for more music. To follow George as he grew through his musical life was an amazing way of soundtracking my journey from young girl to teenager to adult. Eventually I needed more than George, and started growing my musical horizons and educating myself on every bit of music I could source, listening to radio countdowns, watching the fledging MTV and hiding from the world with my walkman. Eventually my part time job meant I could indulge my new passion and it was a landmark moment when I bought what I consider to be my first grown-up album - Elvis Costello’s Spike. In retrospect it was an okay Costello album, but one that contained Veronica which served as an easy bridge from Wham-Dom to my exciting new realm. It would be a few years later when I heard Adam Spencer interviewing Elvis on JJJ that my journey from teenybopper to music aficionado was finally justified. At that point Take That were enjoying the Top 10 with Back for Good and JT was firmly in N-Sync world, resplendent with a haircut borrowed off Screech from saved by the bell. The current frenzy of boyband love was a fact that Mr Spencer had duly noted.

“How do you feel about all these boy bands on the market now when you’re such a serious musician?” he asked Elvis. “I don’t mind them at all, girls love them, then they grow up, and start listening to me,” was Elvis’s wry reply. Suddnely, Elvis knew me better than George ever did. And I realized popstars were no longer singing to me, music was finally speaking to me.

So my lovely One Directioners – have a wonderful time next week. For some of you, this may be the first time you see a band live, where you can see how the boys smile, talk and dance. You will return home, and start new dreams of when they were looking at the crowd, they were actually looking at you. For those of you who have already enjoyed the magic, revel in the joy that there are others around you who are just like you. That can be a good thing y’know. But more importantly there’s a whole new musical world awaiting for you when you’re ready. And guess what it’s shiny, weird, wonderful and as beautiful as the world you’re in. See you when you get here!
