“I love diamonds more than anything,” A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie tells me with a childish grin.

As he enters the chic Surry Hills bar where we meet, an entourage of six by his side, three lush diamond encrusted gold chains are adorned around his neck. Riding off the high of a Billboard #1 Album in Boogie SZN and the release of the Look Back At It music video (featuring a Backpack Kid cameo); he’s allowing himself to splurge.

Born in the Bronx, 22-year-old (suitably named) Artist Dubose is shaking things up. With joints like Drowning (featuring Kodak Black) disrupting the arguably over-saturated hip-hop scene, A Boogie is carving out a prodigious name for himself. Whilst his presence is somewhat quiet, his influence is rapturous, providing somewhat of a mould for his Soundcloud-rapper turned international-star success story. With a wildly successful record having just been dropped, and even more work to be released this year, it's as if we’re catching him right before he’s about to explode. He’s astutely aware of his potential.

    How’s Australia been so far?

It’s been amazing so far, just ain’t seen any kangaroos yet. Gotta go to the Zoo. We did just hear some shit about Koalas though.

    Was it about Chlamydia?

[laughs] Yeah, and they spit on you and some shit.

    What about Laneway?

It’s crazy man. The first festival I think was the craziest so far, we trying to see how this next one is looking. We’re keen.

You’re on a pretty stacked line-up for the festival, were you able to catch any other acts?

Nah, unfortunately. We been just going to the studio a lot, that’s my schedule every day. Never stop working on stuff. I did meet - what’s his name - Denzel Curry though, he’s cool.

Your set at Laneway was crazy. Does that type of show and performance come naturally to you?

That doesn't just come naturally, there's also a process to it. It comes from me and the fans together. It’s like a math problem. Me plus you equals this; the energy.

Drowning is arguably your biggest track to date. Do you feel any pressure to top it?

Biggest track ever. I only compete with myself. That’s my biggest thing in life right now. I don't want to compete with nobody but myself and I don’t want to set boundaries for myself. A Boogie could do this, Artist could do this. I’m going to beat Drowning by five times more platinum. Diamond.

Well you’re on a pretty good track to achieve that; Boogie SZN ended up reaching the Billboard #1, how did that feel?

I feel like the people didn't really get to hear it that much at first. I can't judge an album off a first listen. You've really got to sit there and really listen. Nowadays it's just straight up turn-up songs on an album. I made an album-album where you can really sit down and listen to it. Nobody was used to that no more. So I made that type of shit, and initially, they just sitting there like, 'this is whack'. Then two days later, they listened to it again and I was like, I told you so. That’s when we went #1.

You reference Drake and Future on 4 Min Convo and Michael Jackson on Voices In My Head, Look Back At It and Billie Jean on the album, was went behind that choice?

I didn't really wanna name-drop but I felt like that was the only time I was going to talk about it - period. I don’t really want to say people's names in interviews so I’d rather just release these songs and let them do the talking.

You’ve become quite prolific in the New York rap scene, specifically in The Bronx. Do you feel a pressure to represent them and honour that place?

It’s automatic. It comes with me. I’m never really worried about that. I shout the X out every time. Every song on the album is shouting out the X. I got the X on my back, got me feeling like Malcolm. [laughs]

Come Closer is a stand out on Boogie SZN. How was working with Queen Naija?

Working with Queen Naija was amazing because she came up in a way that I did. I came out of a relationship and I got treated wrong and stuff but in this game, it’s a whole different lifestyle. And she went through that whole thing and that whole process. She's such a good singer; it really was the perfect collab for that song.

Congrats to her as well, she just had a baby. She just dropped her baby!

Look Back At It as well is having a bit of a moment right now. What was it like being able to sample MJ on that one?

MJ is the GOAT. I sampled Remember The Time and You Rock My World, my two favourite songs from MJ and probably my two favourite songs of all time. I’m just happy they gave me credit. Shout out to the estate and everyone who helped create that song. I don't even want to get into the process of getting those samples. The process is the best part though.

Was there a particular track that was hardest to crack?

Nah. When I got something to say, and I go to the booth, it just comes out. I don't say it to people for a reason. I don't talk about my problems in life. I keep quiet and observe for a reason. But when I go to the booth, I just spill it out right there. The mic is my best friend. I love the microphone.

Our conversation ends with a plate of fried chicken and sweet potato fries arriving on the table. Boogie maintains his persona as a rapper who knows what he wants, asking instantly, “Can I get some ketchup too?”
