Australian R&B singer Becca Hatch wowed us with the release of her single Safety earlier this year, but she felt like the song could also be taken in a bit of a different direction. The song sees Becca trying to maintain her grip on the world in the face of chaos, and it's a sultry, soulful track. As the track unfurls, Becca showcases the importance of staying patient when things aren't going your way and creating a space for people to breathe.

She's teamed up with Grammy-nominated producer Willstah for the remix of Safety, taking it from a ballad to a song that's ready for any party playlist. We spoke to Becca about the transformation of the track, as well as past, present and future collaborations, so check out the remix below and read on to learn more about Becca!

Firstly, congratulations on the remix of Safety! You worked with Willstah on the remix – I’d love to know more about how you brought the remix to life?

Thankyou! So Safety was an old track that I made in 2019 that consisted of mostly vocals and guitar. While I loved the story and meaning of the song, the sound felt extremely far from the direction I was heading as an artist; so I kept the demo but knew it needed reworking.

Later in 2020 I brought the demo to Willstah, and we spent a night working on the new idea; which became a garage version that was much more of a party track. Willstah was able to bring a new perspective to the track that portrayed different emotions to the original.

The remix of Safety takes the track from a ballad into more of a party track – what elements do you think need to be present for a perfect summer party?

Good music, good people, and good vibes!

Safety is a song about trying to keep yourself grounded – as someone that’s balancing music and university, what ways have you found helpful to keep yourself feeling balanced when things get hectic?

I found that throughout my final semester at uni and with all things hectic, I really leaned on exercise to help keep me feeling balanced. I exercise most mornings and by keeping that same routine when life is slow or busy helps me reset and start each day on the right foot.

Your music draws from your First Nations and Samoan heritage – can you tell me more about the role music played in your life growing up, and how your background’s influenced your sound, both in the past and moving forward?

Growing up, music was a massive part of my life. I was always drawn to singing, dancing, and doing all things creative, and growing up both First Nations and Samoan I was always drawn to the concept of storytelling through art.

I grew up learning how to Siva from my mum and uncle on my Samoan side, while learning Aboriginal Art and stories from mob. Those experiences really shaped me as a person and a creative; and today it comes out through my songwriting, singing and creativity.

Throughout 2021, you’ve worked with the likes of Planet Vegeta and B Wise – how do you go about feeling out who’s going to be the perfect collaboration for a release?

With collaborations I usually reach out to artists that I am personally a fan of (like Planet Vegeta & B Wise) and see if they wanna get in the studio or link. From there I sus the vibe and see if our energy’s right first, I feel like that’s the most important part.

Australian R&B is in a great place – I’d love to learn about some of your favourite Australian releases right now!

A few of my favourite Australian releases right now:

    •    Blak Matriarchy by Barkaa

    •    We Them Boyz by A.GIRL

    •    Glow by Jess Mauboy

On that, are there any artists, Australian or international, that you’d love to work with in 2022?

I would LOVE to work with Kaytranada. I’ve been a huge fan for a long time and he’s definitely one of my favourite artists!

Finally, what are you hoping the next 12 months look like for you, both in a music and non-music sense?

Manifesting it to be booked and busy! Fingers crossed shows will be flourishing and 2022 will be full of music festivals and concerts. I hope that I can keep dropping music that people connect and vibe with, and I also hope that I can keep building my community of supporters.
