    JEFFE

You may have noticed a name on the upcoming Listen Out Festival line-up that piqued your interest, and rightfully so. JEFFE (pronounced 'Jeff') is up-and-coming Sydney indie pop singer/producer and not that we weren't loving her before, but her recent cover of Talking Heads' Road To Nowhere with fellow Aussies Didirri, Rø and Washington have really got our hearts pumping.

With a sound that's like Lana Del Rey meets Lorde meets Banks meets Bon Iver, JEFFE dropped her One Hundred Percent EP earlier this year. The four-track release is fresh yet familiar, with the opening synths of Undecided sure to get you wanting more.

Firstly how did you first meet Washington, Didirri and Rø for this cover of Road To Nowhere and what made you pick them for this song?

I met all three at different times in my life... Didirri and I have known each other for a while now through social circles in Melbourne when I used to live there. I met Rø through Didirri at BIGSOUND and Washington at the Brisbane show of my first headline tour last year. I picked them because they’re all incredible artists and awesome people and it’s way more fun collaborating with people you know!

I read that you were all on tour so you filmed the clip on the way to the airport! Did you guys actually get to sing along to any songs while on the road?

I must say there was more banter than singing! We all live in different cities so there was plenty of catching up to be done.

Tell us about the song decision – are you a big Talking Heads fan?

I do enjoy me some Talking Heads - the song choice came about through a “road trip”-themed album and I felt [the phrase] ‘road to nowhere’ was quite fitting.

You’re on Listen Out very soon, who are you excited to see and what can we expect from your set?

I’m really excited to see Wafia! I’ve enjoyed her music for a while now and I reckon she’s gonna put on a mad show. I’m finally going to have someone join me for my live show playing keys and samples to give me a bit more freedom to move around so that’s something to look forward to!

You supported Alex The Astronaut and Stella Donnelly over a year ago in Sydney, how do you think you’ve grown musically since then?

Wow, that was quite early in the days of JEFFE, I feel like I’ve grown so much since then. I’ve toured around Europe and the UK and many other gigs in Australia so my confidence has grown drastically as a performer. My set has completely changed with a lot more song additions (and now an additional person). I’ve been spending a bit of time working on my songwriting skills and piano and saxophone so I’m slowly building up my skills in those areas as well; there’s always room for more learning.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’d like to see myself touring the world, I pretty much never want to stop so hopefully by that stage I’m established enough to be able to afford to do that! Ha!

What was the first song you ever wrote about?

It’s funny actually, I was thinking about this the other day - the first song I wrote was when I was about nine years old and it was about the feeling you get when you finally find your true love. I find this kind of hilarious because I had absolutely no idea what that feeling was like and I still don’t.

Do you remember the moment you knew you wanted to become a musician for a living?

I don’t remember ever not wanting that :)
