The devilishly handsome John Gourley of Portugal. The Man fame took time out recently to hit us with his ‘Cool List’ albums of 2011 and proves he’s not just a pretty face… he also has impeccable taste in music. Check it!
FEIST - METALS
Because I love you Leslie Feist.
LYKKE LI - WOUNDED RHYMES
Because Lykke Li means every word of it.
RAPHAEL SAADIQ - STONE ROLLIN’
Because it is my most listened to record of the year. Great tones and great songs to match. Progressive soul with great reference points. Taking Motown to the kids.
BEASTIE BOYS - HOT SAUCE COMMITTEE
Because the Beastie Boys can do no wrong, ever.
CHARLES BRADLEY - NO TIME FOR DREAMING
Because Charles Bradley was my favorite music experience of SXSW 2011. Amazing voice, amazing album.
RAEKWON - SHAOLIN vs. WU-TANG
THE BLACK KEYS - EL CAMINO
Because, (even before hearing it) you know it will be amazing.
UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA - UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA
Because they’re my favorite band of the year.
THE BLACK LIPS - ARABIA MOUNTAIN
Because, this one time, 5 years ago and before I knew the band or their music I met and spent the evening with the Black Lips at the Clermont Lounge in Atlanta, Georgia. I remember this of that evening… keep in mind we don’t know each other or each others music… It was one of the members birthdays. That member finished his beer. I bought that member a beer to replace the finished drink. I handed over the beer to the birthday boy and was all like “Hey , Happy Birthday” or something. He looks at me, takes the beer and responds by simply drinking the beer. No “thank you”. I appreciate that in what I know now (and love) in a punk band.
