Well, it's happened. Hip hop superstars Kendrick Lamar and SZA have been nominated for their very first Oscar for their original song on Black Panther's soundtrack, All The Stars.
They sit alongside great company in Mark Ronson/Lady Gaga (who wrote Shallow from A Star Is Born with a handful of others), I'll Fight from RBG, The Place Where Lost Things Go from Mary Poppins Returns and When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings from The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.
It's not their first major nominations either - All The Stars is also going up for four nominations at the Grammys next month - Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Best Song Written for Visual Media and Best Rap/Sung Performance. It was also nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes but lost to Shallow.
It's a welcome change to see contemporary musicians - particularly from the hip hop world - competing for Hollywood's most prestigious gong. Black Panther is also going hard this year with seven nominations in total, including Best Picture.
