Tour after tour, release after release and it seems that group of Perth psychedelic rockers under Modular People and Spinning Top Music’s wings seem to show no sign of slowing down. Not only is Pond gearing up for the release of their latest smash Hobo Rocket, but it seems as if Kevin Parker (frontman of Tame Impala, avid multi-instrumentalist and producer of Melody’s Echo Chamber’s debut self-titled album (preview it here) is continually coming up with new ideas for new projects.
Last week, Tame Impala’s Facebook released details of a one off performance by Kevin Parker’s new outfit alongside fellow Tame Impala/The Growl/Allbrook and Avery member Cam Avery. The post went something like this:
Hey perthian fiends, our good friend the lovely and evidently pregnant felicity groom had her car stolen on saturday morning, so we’re all going to THE BIRD tonight to raise money for a new one! playing is Maurice Flavel, Electric Toad and our new band we made at about 4 o'clock this afternoon cam, cam and kevin’s groovy groovy funtime disco funk elevator explosion, aka kevin spacey, in an elevator. that’s the band name, all of that. in fact this whole post is the band name. including this. oh yeah and we didn’t have time to find a vocalist so it’s instrumental, the best kind of ental. get down there yo’s! PS sorry about the late notice. see you in about 2 hours!
So, ‘cam, cam and kevin’s groovy groovy funtime disco funk elevator explosion, aka kevin spacey, in an elevator’ took to the stage at the BIRD in WA that evening to assist fellow Spinning Top friend Felicity Groom in raising funds for her…cat…car..?… we aren’t even sure! The band consisted of an evidently unknown keyboard player, Kevin Parker on drums, Cam Avery slappin’ the bass and Felicity Groom as guest vocalist in what appears to be the funkiest 45 minute set we’ve heard since Chic’s appearance at Glastonbury this month.
As this is a one off it’s unlikely for anything to be released or planned for this super-group, but we can always hope! If this 45 minute set below isn’t enough for you, make sure that you grab a listen of Pond’s latest few tracks Xanman and Giant Tortoise! At least this can get fans like us through the next few days until Hobo Rocket is released on August 2nd.
