Last year we premiered LIV LI's foray into electronic pop with Told You, a step away from her roots playing in ambient rock outfit Angels Are Architects. Now she's back with her strongest indie-pop outing yet.
The glossy pop gem is called Freaks And Dreamers, and it's a song in celebration of her younger brother with Down Syndrome. It's a dreamy palette of sounds, spotlighting LIV LI's ethereal voice front and centre as well as a truly beautiful message about embracing each other and celebrating our differences.
"When I was 14, my brother Ethan was born with Down Syndrome. At the time, as a teenager in high school I thought being different was the worst thing in the world and had been very busy conforming, trying not to stand out. Ethan completely turned that mindset around for me. Ethan cannot conform, he cannot fade into the background. He is different and he is beautiful because of that difference. He is a shining light in this world and completed our family so perfectly with his contagious love of life. My brother taught me that we are all wonderfully different and to be ashamed or afraid of who we are robs the world of our uniqueness and leaves it with a gaping hole that no cheap imitations can fill.
"Just like there will never be another Ethan, there will never be another you and being ourselves is our gift to the world around us. It’s how we shine, it’s how we soar. Freaks And Dreamers is about embracing who we are, learning to love ourselves and loving others. Creating the world we want to live in and surrounding ourselves with people who will celebrate you! With all your quirks, colours, preferences and emotions without judgement. We are all beautiful."
Take a listen for yourself - we'll definitely keep watching LIV LI's progression.
