Terminal 5 became a transportation device last week – taking New Yorkers on a journey through space to the DARKSIDE, complete with black hole.
Excitement in the 3000+ capacity warehouse space peaked as Darkside’s Nicolas Jaar + Dave Harrington took the stage amidst a teasing cloud of fog. The hype surrounding the 3 year old band has been sizable of late, and rightly so, as the duo created their beautiful discourse between DJ & blues box guitar that steers well clear of all-too-familiar garish EDM.
If you’re looking for a reason to feel inadequate, Jaar’s accomplishments to date, at age 23, can help you out. Sporting a freshly shaved ‘do, however, you would be forgiven for thinking you were at a sweaty rave & therefore taking some time to melt into the much more mellow Berlin Club vibe emanating from Terminal 5 in New York City. What happened to your curls Nico?
Opening with an extended 12-minute jam, potentially improvised in part, Darkside had the crowd simply staring in bewilderment. The combination of the two musician styles is pretty magical after all. The introduction of an even deeper bassline however, snapped everyone out of their stupors to dance as one giant thrusting pod. Or was that just because the crowd was rammed so tight it was impossible not to be caught up in it?
Dutch visual artists Children Of The Light curated the light show, featuring ethereal fog, multi-coloured lighting, and a huge circular mirror, with light hitting it so perfectly that it acted as a portal hole above Jaar + Harrington’s heads, spinning and cutting through the throbbing audience.
Jaar + Harrington continued their textural performance of extended versions of songs from their 2011 self-titled EP & last years full length album Psychic, including the ridiculously popular Paper Trails and the epic length finale, for which they were joined by support act High Water, Golden Arrow.
