Owen (The Energizer) Rabbit

Owen Rabbit is the human equivalent to the Energizer bunny as in The. Kid. Never. Stops.

Last time we spoke to the Melbourne producer he had just finished a 22 date sold out tour supporting SAFIA and was in the midst of preparing to travel to New York for his debut performance at the CMJ Music Marathon.  Well…in between all of that, he’s also been toiling away on his second single Denny’s .

Considering his recent trip to the states you’d be forgiven in thinking the man took a shine to the pancakes food chain - but no! The story behind the track is deeper and far more poignant than the name initially suggests.

Owen has explained that the track was born from experiencing a very nasty panic attack while in LA, that consequently lead him to seek professional help through therapy sessions, doctors and a course of various prescription medications. Despite undergoing such a distressing episode, he was still reminded of the pleasure and solace that music brings to his life, saying "I'm glad I got help. I'm lucky that I have music in my life. Denny's is about that night and how I changed."

Surprisingly however the track Denny’s is rather upbeat. On first listen, I found it to be very Muscle–esque (another Melbourne producer who came out with the banger Sweaty in 2007) but I like that…. It’s poppy, beat driven and very danceable, and also pleasingly 180 from the first track Holy Holy which took a more mellow approach.

I admire the versatility Owen Rabbit demonstrates here, I enjoy an artist who highlights their musical diversity and isn’t afraid to experiment vocally, which Rabbit does giving us more bravado in Denny’s.

But more importantly the song makes me curious as to the direction of the next single, and then the next,  and eventually the sound of the album. In short, I’m curious for more, and until I get more i'll have Denny’s on rotation on my playlist.
