Answer records used to be a big thing. Unhappily we see less of them now (except in hip hop where there’s not much humour and plenty of beef).
Occasionally it was very fertile ground. Think for example of this chain of call and response tunes: Muddy Waters cuts “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie man”, Bo Diddley rips back with “I’m a Man” and Waters, not to be bested, comes with “Mannish Boy”. Tasty. Or from the Country & Western vaults Kitty Wells “Its Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” as a scorching proto-feminist reply to Hank Thompson’s “The Wild Side Of Life”. Boy put in his place. Firmly. Or Jean Knight’s Stax #1 “Mr Big Stuff” bought to its knees by Vicki Anderson’s “I’m Too Tough For Mr. Big Stuff (Hot Pants)”. And of course we always have a soft spot (and a crunchy centre!) for Ginger Davis and The Snaps apologetic “I’m No Run Around” reply to Dion’s “Runaround Sue”.
Pretty much all classic records.
But it wasn’t always so great. Or so PC. So hands up who’s confused by Vic Waters and the Entertainers (above in great velvet suits and spats) and their tune “I’m White, Its Alright”.
The above is an answer record to James Brown “Say It Loud I’m Black and Proud” it seems. Contains the classic line “I aint tan, but I can jam…”
Funk Classic or Klan anthem?
