As soon as we heard Koi Child's latest single 1-5-9 we knew they'd be the perfect candidates to curate an instalment of our Songs To Chill The F**k Out To series and guess what? WE WEREN'T WRONG. We gave the Spotify keys to keys player/ultimate chill dog Tom Kenny and he (and Alto Sax-pert Jamie Canny) came through with a selection that is as culturally diverse as it is zen.
Find yourself a spare 36 minutes, get comfy and tune in and drop out below and then read on for a little breakdown as to why each tune made the cut.
Samiyam - Lifesized Stuff Animal [Sam Baker's Album]
Crusty, dusty, sticky friction. Like stomping through a tarpit in a rusted diesel mech suit. - Tom
Slum Village - 2U4U [Fantastic Vol. 2]
Dilla at his most understated and Slum Village with a flow that's so perfectly casual and patient. - Tom
Seven Davis Jr. - Words [The Lost Tapes Vol. 1]
What's my assessment of this immaculate stank? These feelings / can't put 'em in words / that's all I can say. - Tom
Africa HiTech - Don't Fight It [93 Million Miles]
A lush and ultra-soothing end to a really interesting album. I love me a cheeky serene epilogue track - that's how we end the Koi Child record ;) - Tom
Syd Arthur - Dorothy [On An On]
This is one of my favourite songs. The vocals are velvet and the instrumentation is delicate. - Jamie
Little Dragon - Constant Surprises [Little Dragon]
I've got so much respect for the subtle articulation and timing on this track; it's constantly simmering away and hinting at buried little oddities. - Tom
Wayne Shorter - Oriental Folk Song [Night Dreamer]
To listen to Wayne Shorter is to ease into a hot bath and let your deepest stresses evaporate. This tune is sleep-eyed nourishment. - Tom
Koi Child's self-titled debut album drops on March 17 and you can get your preorder on for it here.
