Taking 5 In Memory Of Dave Brubeck.

To be honest I never dug Dave Brubeck too much. He just didn’t fit into my “jazz iconography” file – sort of, not “cool” enough. I sort of resented the fact that this school teacher type of guy had been the first jazz cat to feature on the cover of Time magazine (even though it happened way before my life time in 1954 there was still “beef”)

    I also didn’t like that this -

was the first jazz album to sell 1 million copies and not this:

I think I also resented that he provided the name for Blue Rondo A La Turk.

These guys were always the worst of the “new-jazz revivalists” to me (looking back, check that hipster beret and the zoot suit!). Finally I even resented the fact that “hey, he didn’t even write his most famous song”. That was a bit unfair but hey, what’s fair in forming ones musical opinions?! But it was true -“Take Five” is in fact a Paul Desmond composition (Desmond being Brubeck’s silver toned alto player and one of the most under-rated saxophonists around) so I wasn’t lying.

Anyway today is the news that Dave has gone and it got me thinking about the fact that really he is Mad Men incarnate and that I might have been a little wrong. Effortless, swinging cool that you couldn’t recreate now with the biggest marketing budget in the world. So in Dave’s honour take five minutes out and get down to five very swinging versions of his classic song. It’s a killer even if its 5/4 tempo means I will never be able to dance to it without feeling like an idiot, tripping over my feet and making (more of) a dick of myself! Maybe that’s really why I didn’t like it?

Killer latin take by salsero Roberto Roena swingingly remixed for modern times by Nicola Conte

Rub a dub take five. King Tubby blisses the horns out.

Bad ass soul style – “Poppa” Willie Mitchell. Mod jazz baby on Hi Records.

The best of the new jazz singers – Kurt Elling - and a master – Al Jarreau – scat that shit up.

Unreal and live in two flamenco guitar style by the wild and dangerous Rodrigo Y Gabriela.

Now tell me you don’t feel hipper and happier!

R.I.P Dave Brubeck 1920-2012. The world is sadder without you. To buy Dave just cut to the chase and get “Time Off” (Sony). He did some other stuff that was ok but it’s all there and worth every penny of your $8.99. He did some other neat things but that’s the bomb. Better than any Black Eyed Peas joint.
