With a double headline of this calibre, who wouldn’t expect the security guards to be boogying too. Whilst New Yorkers dangled their feet from the second floor balcony of Terminal 5 in Hells Kitchen, security with big bellies were loving mixing up a rogue crowd-surfer chase down dance with a bit of a shuffle-bop.

I must have seen Tame Impala play live close to 10 times now (I’m a little bit of a fan), and I have never been disappointed. This was the first time I had seen them play with new bassist Cam Avery (of fellow Aussie band Pond) and it proved a more mellow performance as a whole, doing nothing to perturb the lively Tuesday night Manhattan crowd, but was perfect for my mellow mood.

Elephant was a clear crowd favourite, but for me the new, slow, mellow, as yet unnamed tune along with Solitude Is Bliss (including that massive jam in the middle) were what keep me coming back to see Tame. I saw Be Above It in a whole new light too; they completely slowed it down and without dragging it out, made all jaws in the room drop simultaneously. Completing the tight set was their ever-developing psychedelic visualisation as a backdrop. Now if only my warehouse neighbours wouldn’t play Lonerism on repeat every night…

    Yeah!

The standard New York celebrity turn out was at roll call; Alexa Chung has been quite vocal about her love for Tame Impala, and was clearly enjoying herself from a side of stage balcony. (thanks for snapping the above pic AC!)

The Flaming Lips bought the melodramatic evening up a notch, as always, featuring the usual confetti spray action & random props [insert creepy baby doll], but also a melee of electrical cords arranged in a messy decoration that of course somehow…just…worked. Wayne Coyne’s energy on stage is still so impressive for a 52 year old, and whilst their live set list still hasn’t changed since the last time I saw them live at Harvest Festival 2012, I’m still OK with them closing with Do You Realiiiiiize.
