Ten Splendid Years

I can’t believe it’s been so many years already. 2012 will be my 11th year in a row at Splendour In The Grass. Some folks say it’s just a music festival. When other people tell me they’ve never been to a Splendour, I almost choke and fall over dying.

It’s not JUST a music festival. It’s more like a religious experience.

And it’s not JUST about music. I’ve seen people get engaged, and I’ve seen people get married at Splendour. I’ve seen people injured and bleeding, and I’ve seen people crying with joy over the emotions evoked by the experience. Splendour In The Grass is, simply, a game-changer. Once you’ve been, you’ll understand why. It gets into your blood, into your head, into your heart. It truly is a life-changing experience.

Every year since 2001, my friends and I have assembled in late-July to get together over many drinks, for our annual Splendour pilgrimage. To the spiritual home of Splendour, Byron Bay, we travel – from Darwin in the North, to Melbourne in the South, we come, by any means necessary. Planes, cars, buses, hitch-hiking, it doesn’t matter. Just get there. This is THE weekend of the year.

From the very first Splendour we experienced back in 2001, this has become our annual catch-up. It revolves around the music, obviously, but there’s SO much more to it. The people that we camp with, that we party with, that we dance with, that we bond with, they’re not JUST friends. They’ve become family – Splendour family. Back when it all started, we got loose and danced to Bodyjar, Grinspoon, The Resin Dogs, Gomez and Doves. Not that I remember a lot of them, but I promise, we were there, and we were on fire! As a 19 year old who was fresh outta Private School, hadn’t travelled much and was from a fairly conservative family, this was a real eye-opener.

The group grew, year-by-year, and our Splendour family, which started with just 8 people, has grown to more than 30 people over the years. Each year, they come, with memories of mud, freezing temperatures and monstrous hangovers. They roll in with gumboots, eskies and ponchos. But, most importantly, they come with smiles, open ears, and warm hearts.

Over the years, we’ve shared our lives with Coldplay, The Music, Jurassic 5, Hilltop Hoods, Dashboard Confessional, Bloc Party, Snow Patrol, Powderfinger, Moby, Arctic Monkeys, Brian Wilson, Death Cab For Cutie, Kaiser Chiefs, Editors, The Shins, Grinspoon, The Wombats, Kisschasy, Manchester Orchestra, Art Vs Science, Band Of Horses, Foals, Ben Harper, The Strokes, Mumford & Sons, Passion Pit, Goldfrapp, Hot Chip, Delphic, Cloud Control, Dananananackroyd, Grouplove, Foster The People, Kanye West, The Jezabels, Young The Giant, Kimbra, Hungry Kids Of Hungry, and so, so many more. They shared their music with us, and we shared our friends, our family, our hearts, and lives with them. And now, every year when we think about Splendour, we think about them, we reminisce, we re-listen to old Splendour playlists, re-living the incredible experiences we’ve shared.

So, when Splendour In The Grass 2012 rolls around, we’ll roll up our sleeping bags, we’ll clean our eskies out, and we’ll load up and get to Byron Bay, back to the spiritual home of Splendour, for another amazing experience. The family will come, old and new, excited for another opportunity to enjoy each other, to enjoy the experience, to enjoy the music. To enjoy life…
