December usually brings about some degree of reflection as we look back upon all things 2013 and wonder where it all went wrong. Whoa now, it didn’t all go wrong though did it? The list below is testament to a few of the things that went right in Australian music.
Plenty of artists didn’t release this year that would undoubtably have graced this list had they done so. We foolishly held our breathe for formal releases from artists like Oscar Key Sung, Banoffee, Bus Vipers, Telling, The Kite String Tangle, Japanese Wallpaper, Fractures, none of which ended up putting out a collected batch of songs. Interestingly enough those are plenty of the beatsmiths currently residing in the zeitgeist at the moment so whether that bubble is still unburst come second quarter next year, we’ll have to wait to see.
There were no notable names from the world of jangly pop this year (were there?) while indie-pop kept it’s nose clean with Vance Joy’s very, very strong single ‘Riptide’ (which was by far the choice cut from his EP, there weren’t too much else going on there) copping ARIA noms and about a trillion sales.
In no particular order, here are some future achievers.
