You would have had to be living under a rock for the past couple of years to be unaware of what a Gotye is. But, for the uninformed, it’s a 32 year old, dorkishly handsome, pumpkin pie gobbling, Belgian beer connoisseur whose first two records got a little radio time over at the Js and on community radio.
Then along came ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’. #1 in twenty five countries. Ten times platinum in this one right here. Covered by those assholes on Glee. Performed at every major festival, ever, including all of them, and on every talk show in the US. And all this from a track that was recorded in a barn and written by a poor man’s Peter Gabriel. Just kidding Wally. More like Phil Collins, AMIRIGHT!? I am kidding though, at least about that Phil Collins/Petey Gabe bullshit. All the rest is straight up fact. But Wally, if you’re out there, what’s your favourite colour? “Unfortunately we don’t know”.
Back before he start consuming planets to feed his unquenchable hunger for platinum record (a la Galactus) he actually had five minutes to himself and was generous enough to spend at least three of those answering a few questions for a struggling music blog with 11 unique visitors a month. LOOK AT US NOW. Anyway, the dude is a legend and you should read the junk he said because he brings the LOLs. We’re not even going to plug the record here because statistically, you probably already own it.
Name - Wally De Backer aka Gotye
Location - Melbourne
Name 3 songs that would be no-brainers to put on a mixtape for that special someone you were trying to woo -
Kate Bush- Cloudbusting, Iron and Wine- Naked As We Came & Geto Boys- This Dick Is For You. I’d call the tape “Mixed Messages”
You’ve turned the lights down low, lit the candles and poured the dom perignon, what LP or song goes on the stereo?
Joan As Policewoman’s “Real Life”. Such a sexy record
What is your fave romantic film of all time?
I think Edward Scissorhands is the most romantic film ever.
You’ve just had your heart broken, what’s the song or record that you play to ease the pain and get you through?
Hmmmm….for wallowing: Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love. For getting back up: The Beatles’ Abbey Road
What song was/or will be played during the first dance at your wedding? Something I can dance to….probably Joe Dolce’s “Shaddapa You Face”
Who’s music do you think has played the biggest part in helping increase the world’s population over the years?
Marvin Gaye, definitely. Heavy D and the Boyz would give him a good run for his money though.
and finally What’s your fave guilty pleasure/cheesiest love song?
In My Pants by The Reddings. It’s more direct than Wind Beneath My Wings.
