It’s not often your universe aligns and one of your favourite musicians, comedians and TV shows all collide in one space. Guess it must be part of that whole global warming extreme weather thing.
It all started with the return of David Brent - Ricky Gervais much loved character from the original UK series of the office. This alone got me excited enough to subscribe to his YouTube channel and check back regularly for more updates to his ‘learn guitar’ series. The icing on the cake arrived last month when Filipino/African American producer Chaz Bundick aka Toro Y Moi decided to cover Slough, a song about the small town where the Office is set.
Toro Y Moi takes Brent’s comedic track, adds some smooth beats and vocals and the result is quite amazing. Put aside the hilarious lyrics (which include “the stations just got a new floor, and the motorway runs by your door”) and it’s actually a very listenable track.
Hopefully this is the beginning of a long and flourishing relationship between Toro and Brent and fingers crossed there’s a musical collaboration between the two on the horizon.
Who did it better?
