A while back we waxed lyrical about the very extremely beautiful cut by Mayer Hawthorne “Henny & Gingerale”. We dug it because somehow it had a little bit of retro joy that reminded us of Marvin Gaye’s super party jam “Got To Give It Up”.
Then Robin Thicke came in and gave a little retro soul flavoured jam called “Blurred Lines” which went to #1 across the world. Very commercial but still nice.
I don’t think that Motor City Drum Ensemble will be #1 in every country, and they may well not a make a saucily inappropriate video, but this one (“Raw Cuts #6”) has something of the same party sprinkles and that may even be a “What’s Going On” sample near the top to keep the Marvin theme together and it definitely samples a version of I’m a Good Woman by either Cold Sweat or Barbara Lynn… not sure exactly which one though! Check it out below.
PS we like Motor City Drum Ensemble – who is from Stuttgart and his DJ Kicks album is particularly delightful spanning Sun Ra, Loose Joints and Tony Allen and finding us this reggae flavoured ripper.
