Sydney musician Carla Wehbe has just released her new single, hurts to love you, and it's a song about having to let someone go, despite loving them deeply. Her songwriting draws from pop sounds of the past and present, giving her music a truly timeless quality.

To celebrate the new single, we've taken a look at Carla's musical journey, and how she's gotten to where she is today. It's been a whirlwind couple of years for Carla, but there's plenty more to come for the Sydney singer.

    Who is Carla Wehbe?

Carla's music feels both current and nostalgic, and wouldn't sound out of place in any era of pop music. Listening to Carla's music, it's not hard to hear the influences of pop giants of yesteryear like ABBA, Queen and The Bee Gees, all artists that have had a significant impact on her songwriting.

Speaking to Women In Pop about what music she listened to growing up, she explains, "When I started to get into music, I would have to say Avril Lavigne was probably one of my main ones. I know it sounds weird, but Justin Bieber.

"I just liked how he kind of did it all, from a young age, you know? The dancing, the singing, the writing. And I guess I'm a sucker for pop. But then I also love a lot of the older eras of music. Specifically the ‘70s, ‘80s, but also the ‘50s, I love. Bee Gees, ABBA, Queen. I have a big range of music interests."

In addition to making her own music, she's also worked with big Australian artists in Illy and Vera Blue. Carla features on Illy's track No Feelings, a song that talks about being in short-lived relationships, and knowing what that might look like for both parties involved. It features on Illy's most recent album, The Space Between, and helped solidify Carla's standing as one of the most exciting voices in Australian pop.

What does her music sound like?

In 2020, Carla released her debut EP, Half Past Nine, which captures various human experiences. It's an EP that is designed to remind listeners that they're not alone - her lyricism is deeply relatable, with each song on the project touching on various aspects of life.

Speaking about the project to Thomas Bleach, Carla says, "Half Past Nine is a collection of songs that explore different experiences we as humans might encounter. From the unrequited love narrative in Somebody Loves You, to the acceptance of the somewhat toxic relationship in Half Past Nine, to the confessions in Love Me For Me about wanting to be loved for who you are, flaws and all.

"In life, we will inevitably experience the bad as well as the good, and in Half Past Nine I hope for people to relate to one, if not all of the songs, and know that they’re not alone in what they are going through." 80's-inspired synths are peppered throughout the EP, and it showcases Carla's ability to turn her experiences into relatable tales.

    What is Carla's latest release?

Carla Wehbe's newest single, hurts to love you, captures the pain of having to push someone that you love away. It's not a pleasant thing to do, but sometimes it's what has to happen so you can grow. The song is another example of her ability to blend together elements of different pop eras, and it's got a retro vibe while still feeling innovative and cutting-edge.

Speaking about the track, Carla explains, “It’s about losing someone that you care deeply about. You love them so much that it hurts too much to be close to them, so you have to separate yourself. And you realise that all the things you spoke about doing, or planned to do, aren’t going to happen anymore and you’re just going to have to live with that."

The track was written alongside Norwegian songwriters Jim Bergsted and Helge Moemthat, using synths as the base for the production. Carla's vocals on the track sound as timeless as ever, and each lyric hits home with pinpoint accuracy.

In addition to taking charge of the music, Carla is also a photographer and videographer, with a clothing label on the way. She loves being involved in every step of the musical process, which means each song is a true reflection of her musical vision.
