Puerto Rican-Dominican-Colombian artist IV Jay is a bonafide social media star, and she's now looking to take over the music industry.
Discovering she could sing a few years ago, she took to Instagram to release covers of some of her favourite tracks, and as they say, the rest is history.
She's just released her latest track, Love Song, and much like the rest of her discography so far, it's a hit.
Speaking to Complex about her writing process, IV says, “I have to be by myself for some reason. It's easier for me to write when it's kind of just a few people in the room. And I have to have some type of candle, low lighting.
"I need to be in a very calm environment, and I'm actually a writer writer. I like to write with pen and paper rather than type. So, it always has to be super chill. I'll probably draw little doodles on the side [of the page], and then it'll just start flowing out.”
She's influenced by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Alicia Keys and Adele. She says "very soulful, down-to-earth R&B" is her jam, and that comes across in her music. Her music stays grounded, and that's part of why so many people are looking to her to see what sounds she embraces next.
Funny story - IV Jay's name was inspired by the 4th track on Childish Gambino's Because The Internet, Sweatpants. Not only that, but she's also fluent in Simlish - and one of the first ever songs that she co-wrote, Pretty Wings, appeared in the new Sims 4 game.
She's planning to release an EP very, very soon, so keep an eye out for that. We're digging what we've heard from IV Jay so far, and we can't wait to see what direction her music continues to go in.
