We caught up with a bat shit crazy (in the best possible way) Duran Duran fan and asked them to pick the 5 items in their ridiculously epic DD collection they couldn't live without...

Growing up as a kid, my life changed when I started watching MTV and seeing videos by bands like Duran Duran. They opened my mind to so many things from music, art, fashion and especially travel.  Their videos were filmed in locations that – at the time- I could barely pronounce, let alone even knew existed. In addition, Duran Duran started to appear all over 16 Magazine and my best friend Joanie and I became massive fans of the boys from Birmingham England. We became totally enamoured with their cool looks, great videos and style and we would collect anything and everything we could find on Duran Duran with our babysitting money.

Duran Duran ended up influencing my life in so many ways- to the point where they actually lead me to my career in the music industry which I have held now for many years. I have been a fan of their music through thick and thin and my best friend Joanie and I still to this day remain close and always keep in touch about Duran Duran.

Over the years, I have held onto my treasured collection of Duran Duran paraphernalia and to this day, I value it just as I did when I was a kid. I have some amazing memories of specific items and it’s actually quite hard for me to pick my top 5 most treasured pieces, but if I had to leave most of it behind and take only 5 things, here’s what they would be and why.

    My Duran Duran Scrapbook

Little did I know it, but back when I was a kid, I was actually paving the way for my career in publicity and promotions with this thing.  I used to save every possible newspaper clipping, magazine story, photos and letters from the fan club or anything I could find on Duran Duran and I would put it in my scrapbook.  Each time I found something new, it was a like a little piece of gold to add to my treasure.  Looking back on it now- it amazes me to see how I used to actually make note of what publication the story or feature was from and how I would write the date on them as well.  I’m so glad I made this and kept it as it holds a lot of great memories for me.

My very first Duran Duran concert ticket

This was to their show in Philadelphia, PA on March 10, 1984 at the Spectrum. I remember it so vividly.  Joanie and I had 6th row seats in front of the stage on the left hand side- the same side as her favorite- John Taylor.  We were way too young to drive and Philly is a good 2 hours from my hometown- so my sister in-law’s sister (also named Karen) took us on a bus trip to the concert. It was just amazing. I remember how anxious we were for Duran Duran to come on stage and they had this big red curtain with a white wavy stripe across it – just hanging there and every time the curtain moved, we would scream!  The show was my very first concert in a big Arena like that and one that I’ll never ever forget.  We both screamed so loud that I literally couldn’t talk for 4 days and couldn’t hear for 2. (Mind you- it was great for school as I didn’t have to do anything in French class!)

My very first Duran Duran album “RIO”.

For Christmas 1982, my brother Tommy got me the Duran Duran “Rio” album on vinyl (of course).  At first, I remember I was a bit surprised because it wasn’t something I had on my Christmas list.  Up to this point, I only really knew “Hungry like the Wolf” single and the “Rio” video was just starting to get shown on MTV.  Not sure what made my brother buy that particular record for me- but I am so glad he did. I seriously must have listened to thousands of times on my turntable stereo in my bedroom- probably more than any other record in my entire collection. I remember my friend Joanie also had a DD “Rio” album and we used to play it down her house as well whenever we would hang out there.  We both became instant “Duranies” because of it.  Aside from the hit singles, we loved the whole album- especially cuts like “Hold Back the Rain” and “New Religion” and of course “The Chauffeur”.  To this day- it’s still one of my absolute favorites.

My Duran Duran black decal t-shirt.

Back in the day, there used to be places that would do “iron-on” designs onto t-shirts with a hot press. They were very popular at places like the boardwalks in Atlantic City or Wildwood, NJ.  I’ll never forget when I got my Duran Duran decal t-shirt. The design was of one of my favourite all-time pictures of the band and I remember getting it done on a black t-shirt because that was the color that most of the members of Duran Duran said was one of their favorites! (LOL)!  Lucky for me, I got it big enough so I was able to have it for many years and grow into it.  One of my favourite memories was the one time I was wearing it when I met the band in New York at a radio station and I told them that it was an original  and 27 years old and John Taylor said to me  something along the lines of “ Good on you because it still fits!”

    My Duran Duran pin collection.

Again, so many priceless memories lie in this box of over 100 different Duran Duran pins or buttons.  I got some of them at their concerts, some via mail order,  &  some from the fan club, etc.  Each one has a story but I suppose one of my strongest memories of these pins was how we used to wear them to school – every single day. I was lucky enough to attend public school so I didn’t have to wear a uniform so I able to dress in whatever I wanted and I would wear a matching Duran Duran pin to go along with my outfits.  My mate Joanie did the same (of course) and I remember the one day when we were walking to school she realized she forgot to put hers on when she left her house so she had to go back to get it before we got to class!  They were THAT important to us back then… we couldn’t leave home without one!  My favourite always seemed to change but I suppose my very first one would be the most special. It’s just a black button with Duran Duran in white, but it’s cool and it was the one that got me started collecting my DD pins!
