Our recent love for Jose James’ blistering version of Strange Fruit reminded us of just what a great song that is. It’s political but not polemical, bubbles with righteous anger, and is as important in history as “Blowing In The Wind” or “The Message”.
After my first listen to Kanye West’s new YEEZUS record the standout track by far for me was “Blood On The Leaves”. One of the three samples featured is Nina Simone’s achingly dark cover version of “Strange Fruit”.
Over the sunniest of sunny Easter weekends I mused on the Nova/iTunes Hottest (selling) 200 of all time (Australian only version) and the Plan B single “Ill Manors” (which isn’t selling as much as it should). I had to ask whether Jesus had really come down and died in order to provide us with an extra day off to be taunted with more Chris Brown (or most of the rest of Nova’s content really).
