Ah, time. It's one of the things that holds society together, and musicians love writing about it. After all, it's something we can all relate to, so why wouldn't you talk about it in a song? Whether it's the drummer in a band helping to keep the rest of the band in line, or a rapper trying out a new rhyme scheme, time is instrumental to music (pardon the pun).

To celebrate the release of A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's collaboration with Lil Durk, 24 Hours, we've taken a look at some of the best songs about periods of time, and what they can teach us. Without time, these songs wouldn't exist, so we're glad it's a thing.

FourFiveSeconds - Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney

When Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney teamed up for FourFiveSeconds, it promised to be a huge moment, and it didn't disappoint. The track, which debuted at the Grammys back in 2015, is a pop masterclass, and is a track about heartbreak and redemption. Rihanna sings about how she's "four, five seconds from wylin'", and it's a track for those that are about to make some bad decisions.

Speaking about how the song came together, Kanye says, "I'm executive producer of Rihanna's album, and I said I'd done a few songs with Paul McCartney and she couldn't get past this record. She had to have it on her album... So now we at the Grammys doing it."

Rihanna elaborated on this in an interview with V Magazine, saying, "The thing that made me fall in love with [FourFiveSeconds] is the juxtaposition of the music and the lyrics. When you read the lyrics it's a completely different song than what you are hearing. The music is easygoing, but the lyrical content is very loud and in your face."

4 Minutes - Madonna (feat. Justin Timberlake & Timberland)

There's a sense of urgency from both Madonna and Justin Timberlake on 4 Minutes, one that makes you aware that the clock is ticking. The pair sing that "We only got four minutes/To save the world" and they make you feel like you're on a mission alongside them.

Speaking about the song, Madonna says it's a track about saving the environment. However, she mentions that when you're saving the world, you have to have fun while doing it. Otherwise, it's not going to get done. It's hard to argue with that logic.

One Week - Barenaked Ladies

If you've ever been in a relationship and had a fight, then chances are you'll relate to Barenaked Ladies' One Week. The opening lyrics of the track are "It's been one week since you looked at me/Cocked your head to the side and said "I'm angry"", and the story of the song highlights that the singer knows he's messed up, but he's too proud to admit it.

Of course, there are some morbid fan theories about the track, including a theory by a Reddit user that the song is actually about a man murdering his partner. You can read the thread here and decide for yourself.

20 Min - Lil Uzi Vert

Lil Uzi Vert's track 20 Min is a song about his ex-girlfriend, Brittany Byrd, and the first time they met. It talks about how there's "Twenty more minutes until I'm on" stage, as well as the other women Uzi has met through music.

It's the last track on his 2017 album Luv Is Rage 2 (Deluxe), and it was one of the most anticipated tracks on the record after Uzi previewed a snippet of it. Thankfully, the time spent waiting was worth it.

11 Minutes (with Halsey feat. Travis Barker) - YUNGBLUD

YUNGBLUD and Halsey have some serious chemistry, and that's plain to see on their 2019 track 11 Minutes, which also features pop-punk hero Travis Barker. It's a track that tells the story of a couple that's in love, and it has a tragic ending.

Speaking to NME, YUNGBLUD says the track came about after they met up to talk about music. "“More and more beers went down and I was telling her about this song that I was writing called 11 Minutes.

"It told the story of two young people; you know the couple, man. They’re so in love in high school and you’re like, ‘They’re going to get together’. I can see the couple in my mind right now (it’s May Smith and Matty Spencer from my school)." You'll have to listen to the track to find out what happens in the end.

Golden Hour - Kacey Musgrave

When Kacey Musgraves released her 2018 album Golden Hour, it captured a period in her life that was "golden". She got married to her now ex-husband in 2017, Ruston Kelly, and she wrote about the track

Speaking about the album, and the track, Kacey told Elle that it was fantasy, whereas her new album is more realistic. She says, “If you would’ve told me the night of the Grammys, ‘Hey, in two years, you’re going to be divorced and have a whole ’nother album written,’ I would have been like, ‘F*ck off. No. No way. Golden Hour was, in a lot of senses, escapism. It was fantasy. It was rose-colored glasses."

Weekend (feat. Miguel) - Mac Miller

Mac Miller and Miguel teamed up to the capture the joy of the weekend on their track Weekend, and it sounds like they're having a hell of a time. Mac's got some cash in his pocket, and some weed to smoke.

The chorus and post-chorus talks about heading out and having a good time, with Mac and Miguel singing on the chorus, "Everything will be good by the weekend (By the weekend)". It's a call to arms, and a track that'll get you ready to make the most of your Saturday and Sunday.

It's fewer than six months since Oliver Cronin went viral with the single 'Boys Don't Cry', and the Byron-born pop artist has quickly become one of the most compelling pop artists of this moment.

Cronin's latest single is 'Exit'. It follows September's mini EP, For Now..., which included the widely playlisted singles 'Memories' and 'Trapped in L.A.' 'Exit' will feature on Cronin's upcoming debut full-length EP, Beautiful Nightmare, which is due out on Thursday November 17.

Cronin wrote 'Exit' with solo artist and producer Sofia Quinn and producer and songwriter Brandon Sammons, aka Bsamz. Quinn and Bsamz are US-based, where Cronin has been spending a lot of time since 'Boys Don't Cry' lit a fire around the world in June. But Cronin and his collaborators worked on 'Exit' over Zoom, with Cronin drawing influence from his immediate surroundings.

“Coming into summer here in Australia, it’s the perfect high-energy, feel-good track, with a little bit of sexual tensions sprinkled throughout,” Cronin said of 'Exit' in a statement.

There's definitely a decent amount of sexual energy underpinning 'Exit', but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of tension. Rather, Cronin's lyrics teem with lust and desire.

"No stress, good sex we feeling chemical," he sings over elastic drum programming and bass playing that sounds straight out of a Dua Lipa session. "Up, down, left, right, she keep me on my toes," he sings. "She know I like it though."

'Exit' is released alongside a live performance video that features Cronin and the musicians Xavier Scanu (guitar), Nikos Haropoulos-Smallman (keyboard) and Daryl Chin (drums) performing the song within Lake Tyrrell salt lake in northwest Victoria.

"We had the band set up on a wooden boardwalk that sits in the middle of the lake, providing an insanely picturesque setting," Cronin said of the video.

The live version of 'Exit' reveals the strong emo influences in Cronin's singing style, while also demonstrating his active and engrossing performance style.

Cronin's debut full-length EP, Beautiful Nightmare, is due out on Thursday November 17.

Brisbane-born multi-hyphenate Sloan Peterson has unveiled the latest track from what is shaping up to be a massive year, with Sick And Selfish arriving today.

The new single sees Peterson returning to her rock roots, displaying a sense of visceral authenticity as she shares taunting synths and moody Lana Del Rey-esque vocals, all atop an unrelenting galloping riff. The result is a powerful earworm, inspired by Mark Ronson's Angel Olsen-featuring True Blue, which itself was a standout track from Ronson's 2019 album, Late Night Feelings.

As she explains, Sick And Selfish is all about taking something for granted and lamenting its absence once it’s gone. "I wrote this song at a really anxiety-filled time in my life," Peterson says.

"I was on tour and very vulnerable, and hadn’t been feeling inspired creatively or even have energy to perform. I had just played my Sydney show, and had a writing session on the Monday," she adds. "Monday comes, and I was completely unprepared, so I decided to go to a café and just sit there and write the first thing that came to my head.

"I was thinking about not taking something for granted, but only knowing you’ve taken it for granted when it’s gone, and feeling foolish. This song is really close to my heart."

Both Sick And Selfish and recent single, June's Wear Out My Heart, are set to feature on Peterson's forthcoming EP, Lost Illusions, which is due to arrive on 20th October, and serves as her first collection of work since her 2019 debut album, Midnight Love, Vol.2.

"I wrote most of this EP at a time when I was struggling to understand my identity and was questioning some of the decisions I was making," Peterson explains.

"Music is my therapy, and listening to these songs reminds me to enjoy the present, and appreciate the little things. I hope you enjoy my EP - so much joy, sweat, tears and years went into it!"

Just weeks after kicking off their latest Australian tour, virtual icons Gorillaz have announced their newest era, detailing their upcoming album, Cracker Island.

Set to arrive on 24th February, 2023, the new record is a little ways away, but thankfully they've unveiled a huge single to tide us over by way of New Gold. Featuring the likes of Tame Impala and Bootie Brown (who you might remember from their 2005 single, Clint Eastwood), the track is a slick piece of psychedelic pop, blended with the classic Gorillaz production style.

Cracker Island arrives as the band's first new album since 2020's Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, and according to the band, it's on track to be a pretty special entry into their catalogue.

"Cracker Island is the sound of change and the chorus of the collective," explained guitarist Noodle. "When the reckoning comes, gotta be ready to step through the gateway. Cracker Island’s got the entry codes," added Russel Hobbs.

"The path to Cracker Island isn't easy to find ‘cos it's underwater," noted 2D, while Murdoc Niccals concluded; "The hallowed tones of Cracker Island will soundtrack our collective ascension into the new dimension! JOIN ME!"

As always though, Cracker Island is a heavily collaborative record from the group, featuring some high-profile names. Leading the charge is, of course, none other than Tame Impala, who have managed to curate a name as one of the leading Australian rock bands of the last decade. Led by Kevin Parker, Tame Impala have teamed up with The Pharcyde's Bootie Brown for the recently-released New Gold.

Elsewhere, the title track sees the group working with Thundercat, the US bass extraordinaire, while Silent Running sees the addition of Adeleye Omotayo, who rose to fame as a backing vocalist for Amy Winehouse. While Thundercat is already one of the most in-demand musicians thanks to his two-decade-plus career, so too is Omotayo considered one of the finest and most underrated vocalists of the last two decades.

Lastly, the record also sees a handful of massive icons joining the record, including chart-topping Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny, alt-rock pioneer and musical chameleon Beck, and enduring Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks.

Though these names feel like a strong 'get' for Gorillaz, it's difficult to understate how impressive their presence is. While Bad Bunny is already one of the world's most popular non-English language acts, so too is Beck one of the most awarded and most celebrated alt-rock acts of the last three decades. This is, of course, without even noting Stevie Nicks' role as one of the world's highest-selling artists, with Fleetwood Mac itself selling more than 120 million records over their lifetime.

Individually, they're all artists who stand tall as leaders of their respective genres, but combined, onto a singular Gorillaz album, it's a testament to the sort of talent that Damon Albarn is working with.

Cracker Island is set to arrive on 24th February, 2023 with pre-orders available now.

It's been four years since the release of their last album, but Panic! At The Disco have made sure that the wait was more than worth it with Viva Las Vengeance.

Released as their long-awaited seventh album, Viva Las Vengeance is the reflective comedown to what Brendon Urie delivered on 2018's Pray For The Wicked, which topped charts globally alongside its massive single High Hopes.

Recording the new album direct to a tape machine with Jake Sinclair and Mike Viola, the record sees Urie utilising more guitars and classic rock influences than previous albums, with the album itself serving as something of a tribute to the arena rock sound of the '70s – something very common in Urie's hometown of Las Vegas.

"Viva Las Vengeance is a look back at who I was 17 years ago and who I am now with the fondness I didn’t have before," Urie explains. "I didn’t realise I was making an album and there was something about the tape machine that kept me honest."

Released today, the album has been preceded by a handful of singles, including the likes of Viva Las Vengeance, Middle Of A Breakup, Don't Let The Light Go Out, and Local God, which definitely underlines the historical, biographical quality of the new album.

"We signed a record deal at 17/Hated by every local band/They say we never paid our dues," Urie sings. "It's 2021 and I'm almost famous/You never really cared about that."

Currently, Panic! At The Disco are on track to support their new album with a North American tour this year, and European dates next year. It's been four years since they last visited Australian shores, so the chances are good that a batch of local dates will be announced in the near future.

INTERVIEW: Great Gable Shine Brighter Than Ever On 'On The Wall In The Morning Light' ben.madden Mon, 11/07/2022 - 07:33

Perth rockers Great Gable have just released their raucous new album, On The Wall In The Morning Light, and lead singer Alex Whiteman couldn't be more excited. When we speak to Al prior to the album's release, he's on set at the music video shoot for their latest single, Sidewalk, and he's looking forward to sharing the album with fans. While it's only been a couple of years since the band released their triumphant debut album, Tracing Faces, back in 2020, the band feels like On The Wall In The Morning Light has existed in their world for a while. "We've had these songs for a long time, and we've had enough time to fall in love with them again, and fall out of love with them," Al explains.

The band are in love with the songs once more, and they've been sharing glimpses of the new album on the live stage. They've just wrapped up a tour that saw them play shows in New South Wales, Western Australia and New Zealand in May and June, but there's a lot of touring still to come in 2022. To celebrate the release of On The Wall in The Morning Light, they'll be touring around Australia throughout October and November, playing their largest shows to date. It's a great time to be Great Gable.

From the first few notes of Dancing Shoes, the opening track on On The Wall In The Morning Light, there's a sense that the band have kicked things up a notch. It's hard not to get swept up in the party that is a Great Gable song, and the band's drawn in countless fans since the release of their debut single, Only For You, back in 2016. On The Wall In The Morning Light is similarly magnetic, and the album is often more carefree and upbeat than many might have felt over the last two years. That's part of the band's magic, though. A lot of On The Wall In The Morning Light is laden with sun-soaked, slightly hazy guitars, while Al's laidback vocals on songs like Another Day and Pedestal are sure to soundtrack your next summer road trip to where you'd rather be. Above all else, On The Wall In The Morning Light will help you get through the winter months. Slap on your sunscreen and enjoy.

However, there's also a more solemn undercurrent to On The Wall In The Morning Light. Slower numbers like I Know and If You & I offer a brief glimpse into the band's mindset throughout the pandemic, highlighting a different, more nuanced side of the band. If You & I contains lyrics like "It’s getting harder to imagine/Living life without a care", while the track's meandering guitar conjures a sense of helplessness that might be far too familiar to many. It's not surprising that traces of the world's melancholy exist within the fabric of On The Wall In The Morning Light, even if the album is largely celebratory. It's hard to ignore what we've all been through recently.

Looking back on the last couple of years, Al confesses, "I can't help but be a bit melancholy sometimes. My songs, the ones that I bring, are usually the ones that are pretty slow. The upbeat ones are the ones that the boys bring in." Al says that there was a period of time throughout the pandemic where the band "forgot what it was to leave the house with a bit of purpose", and he's certainly not alone in saying that. Much like the rest of the world, the band felt like life was on pause throughout 2020 and 2021. "For the first year [of the pandemic], we all just sat around waiting it out. But then we got back to writing because we knew that we had to come up with another album," Al adds.

The band took advantage of the extra time to write, ending up with "40 songs" to choose from when curating the tracklist for On The Wall In The Morning Light. The result is an album that gives all four members - lead singer Al, guitarist Matt Preen, drummer Callum Guy and bassist Christopher Bye - the chance to shine, both individually and as a unit. This wasn't by accident, either, as the band wrote the songs that appear on On The Wall In The Morning Light both separately and together. The individual writing sessions meant all four members were able to take their own ideas further before they brought them to the band, exploring their thoughts in ways that might not have been possible if the project was solely written collaboratively. Summing up the band's approach to songwriting, Al says, "If something feels good, we just don't second guess it. We just go with it."

Where do you go when you want to bring your songs to life? Matt Corby and Alex Henriksson's Rainbow Valley Studios. Great Gable are signed to Matt and Alex's Rainbow Valley Records, and the newly established Rainbow Valley Studios is where the record came alive. All four band members congregated at the studios, living and working on-site for nearly a month to turn their songwriting sketches into On The Wall In The Morning Light. A typical day at Rainbow Valley Studios looks something like this: a lot of recording, followed by some beers, Mario Kart, table tennis and cornhole (and an opportunity to listen back to what the band had achieved during the day). Al reveals that Matt Corby is "really, really good" at cornhole (the game where you throw beanbags into a hole located on an angled wooden board). Some people truly can do it all.

Album closer Do You Belong features the lyric "I don't want to be another wasted moment", a sentiment that captures the band's frustration at things coming to a halt. Al explains, "There was this sense of desperation. We want to succeed in what we're doing. We want to get our tunes out there, and it felt like for a while there we couldn't do anything." It's a feeling that many musicians have felt over the last couple of years, and it sums up the band's mindset when writing On The Wall In The Morning Light. When you don't know what lies on the other side, you put your all into what you're doing.

On The Wall In The Morning Light is just as fun as anything the quartet have released to date, but it's not an album that shies away from the reality of what it has meant to be an artist (and indeed, a human) over the last couple of years. There's been a lot of darkness, but the morning light is starting to shine through again. The band's been able to tour again throughout 2022, and Al lights up when talking about being back on stage. He says he's loved "playing live shows again, and just getting up there and just remembering what made you fall in love with it in the first place." Of course, the travel is still a bit of a pain, but you can't win them all, right?

Beloved English trio The Wombats have stepped into triple j's studios for Like A Version, and they've covered Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill. It's a rendition that prominently features The Wombats' flair while also highlighting the masterful songwriting that has made Kate Bush's music so timeless.

The cover features a healthy serving of guitar, but the star of the show is lead singer Matthew 'Murph' Murphy's vocals. He's helped out by drummer Dan Haggis, who's on backing vocals duty. Dan also swapped the drumkit for a guitar to bring this cover to life. Running Up That Hill, which was originally released in 1985, has seen a massive spike in popularity thanks to Stranger Things, after featuring in a pivotal scene during the fourth episode of Season 4.

Speaking about the cover, Dan stressed that the band were already "huge Kate Bush fans". He mentioned, "Obviously, recently, it's had a real resurgence from Stranger Things. So, it made us think 'oh, maybe we could give that a go?'" He added that he “first heard Kate Bush driving in a van on a cassette tape across the south of Spain to a cousin’s wedding when [he] was, like, 10 or something."

The band have just wrapped up an Australian tour in support of their most recent album, Fix Yourself, Not The World. It's an album that is full of positivity (or at least, when compared to the memorable melancholy of previous albums that has endeared The Wombats to fans across the world), and they'll be back in Australia to play Spilt Milk in November.

Rico Nasty has shared her new single, Black Punk, and it's a track that features a rock-inspired beat. Rico's blending together elements of rock and rap on Black Punk, and it's another example of Rico's versatility. Who's doing it like her? This is guaranteed to be a hit at her live shows going forward, and we can already see the moshpits forming now.

Speaking to Kerrang! about the track, Rico explained, “Being a black punk person, walking into certain rooms is very uncomfortable. People look at you like they’re fucking afraid of you. People count you out. People downplay you. People think you’re weird.

“This song is for my weirdos who resonate with that sense of alienation that comes with being just who you are. I thought it was very important to acknowledge my black people, because they’re just starting to get acknowledged in the punk space. It’s a calling for them.”

Black Punk will feature on Rico's upcoming project, Las Ruinas, alongside recent releases Intrusive and Vaderz. It's set to be a very personal project, and it'll be out on July 22nd. We can't wait.

Sydney musician Sloan Peterson has just released her groovy new single Wear My Heart Out, and it's a collaboration with her BFF and fellow musician Pearl. The pair use the track to reflect on their lockdown experiences, while also reminding listeners to live your best life.

The song combines elements of rock and pop, and the result is a track that'll have you floating on air. Don't let anyone tie you down. Instead, call up your BFF and go have a night out. It's what you deserve.

Talking about Wear My Heart Out, Sloan explains, “I tend to be a lone wolf, spending a lot of time struggling to socialize or even attend events. Music was one of the only communities I had been a part of or known, and so it was a no-brainer – I wanted my next single to have my best friend featuring on it, bringing some girl power and community back into my life!

“Pearl and I wrote this song one morning over a cuppa in Rose Bay, after dissecting our most recent experiences in life, and relating them to other stories we had heard from people in lockdown.”

The video for Wear My Heart Out is loosely reminiscent of the opening scene of Guardians Of The Galaxy, and it's a celebration of Sloan and Pearl's friendship. Explaining how the video came together, Sloan reveals, “We only had a small team of four, including Pearl & myself, so we had the freedom to run around the city with no restrictions.
