Back in 2011 (before Kendrick and A$AP in fact, or BK) it was a bit of a surprise when the best hip hop album of that year came out on Sub-Pop Records, the legendary home of grunge. Even more of a shock was it featured a member of once widely derided uncool jazz rappers, Digable Planets.
But Ishmael Butler and Tendai ‘Baba’ Maraire aka Shabazz Palaces made a truly space age, experimental hip hop album that brought new industrial electronic beats into play with space age, conscious lyrics. And titles like Endeavors For Never (The Last Time We Spoke You Said You Were Not Here. I Saw You Though) Naturally the album made every critics end of year lists, deservedly.
Now, new music shows they have a sure touch. They Come in Gold is from the soon to drop Lese Majesty.
Quietly exciting.
