BENNETT - Constantly Elevating

One of our fave Australian artists and pretty much a BFF of Cool Accidents, BENNETT is back at it again with a new exhibition which opens this Wednesday evening in Sydney at Kind Of Gallery (70 Oxford St) and I’ve gotta say, based on the sneak peeks we’ve been privy to on his Instagram (@B_E_N_N_E_T_T) the dude really has leveled up in a BIG way when it comes to his art.

When we first met him back in the day I guess he was doing more of what you’d call ‘street’ inspired stuff which was great (this writer even has a couple hanging in their crib) but the new collection appears to show that the kid has grown up and he is now producing pieces that to me, wouldn’t look at all out of place on the walls of such places as the MONA or MOMA… Now I’m definitely no art expert but I do know what I like and from what I’ve seen I’ll hopefully be adding another one to the collection when I check it out later this week.

Based on the fact that I am no expert I asked the man himself to break it down for us in 'art’ speak and while I had his ear I got him to put together a playlist of tunes that he was listening to as he put the collection together which you can check below.

    Take it away BENNETT!

Working from visual stimulants as well as from memory, my latest series of works explore the idea of alternative environments created by appropriating and re-contextualsing existing elements which are often overlooked or disregarded by the public (myself included).

Referred to as 'mindscapes’ these gentle and inviting abstractions directly reflect my new found perspectives on the world around us, both literally as well as in a more spiritual sense.

I have employed the use of colour field abstraction, combined with subtle collaged and drawn elements to make the work personable and relatable, whilst also trying to challenge the audience to engage with the work on an intimate level in order to make personal discoveries.

The title of the show 'Constant Elevation’ relates to the vast and expansive qualities of the work, as well as referencing the aerial view point from which much of the inspiration for this show was drawn.

Whilst the colour palette is fairly muted and tonally quite restricted, i would definitely still say that there is an overall sense of positivity, freedom and emotional excitement within this collection.
