As America (and the world) erupts in Superbowl craziness today, Cardi B has confirmed in the interview that she did get asked to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime show but declined to stand in solidarity with NFL player Colin Kaepernick.
Speaking to AP, Cardi said, “My husband, he loves football. His kids play football. It’s really hard for him. ... He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he can’t go to the Super Bowl, because he’s got to stand for something.
"You have to sacrifice that, I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.” She explained she had "mixed feelings" about the whole thing.
Despite not taking part in the performance, Cardi was still on a hilarious Pepsi ad with Lil Jon and Steve Carell. According to Spin, when criticised about her involvement with the Super Bowl elsewhere, she said, "well, if the NFL could benefit off from us, then I’m going to benefit off y’all. Y’all make the most money off our people. Why am I not going to take advantage of y’all and take money from y’all too? Because of y’all, we are getting these parties."
Kaerpernick was essentially booted from his role as quarterback when he knelt during the American National Anthem to peacefully protest police brutality and racial inequalities.
After Cardi declined the Halftime show, the NFL recruited Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi to perform, with both Maroon 5 and Travis Scott promising to make hefty charitable donations from their big paychecks. Jay-Z, Rihanna and Pink have reportedly also declined the invite due to the controversies
