After two weeks of intermittent teasing about something new on the horizon for Foals, Yannis Philippakis and co. have finally revealed the lead single from their upcoming two-parter project, Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost.
Exits is a six-and-a-half minute epic with a short film to match, full of James Bond-esque vibes and edge-of-your-seat action movie moments. It's also where the scenes of the man on fire and woman in the industrial complex where hailed from in the album trailer.
We've also copped the Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1's album cover and tracklist and a bevy of world tour dates (nothing with us on it, FYI).
Of the two albums, Yannis said, "They’re two halves of the same locket. They can be listened to and appreciated individually, but fundamentally, they are companion pieces.”
Of Exits, he says, "There’s a definite idea about the world being no longer habitable in the way that it was. A kind of perilousness lack of predictability and a feeling of being overwhelmed by the magnitudes of the problems we face. What’s the response? And what’s the purpose of any response that one individual can have?”
There's a definite thread of dystopia running through both projects, detailing a world on the brink of environmental and social collapse.
"Lyrically, there are resonances with what's going on in the world at the moment,” says Yannis. “I just feel like, what’s the utility of being a musician these days, if you can’t engage with at least some of this stuff? These songs are white flags, or they’re SOSs, or they’re cries for help… each in a different way.”
We'll be receiving Part 1 of the project on March 8th.
