Naarm/Melbourne producer and DJ FOURA has just released her new single, Power, and it's one that'll make you walk a bit taller next time you step out of the house. Featuring elements of house and UK garage, Power is crackling with late-night energy, and you'll want to turn it all the way up. Walls should be rattling when this is playing (just make sure anything on the wall is secured first).

Speaking about the track, FOURA says, "It's a reference to being a woman in dance music, it’s about claiming your power and strength. I wrote it for women but also for others who have overcome struggles of all kinds and those who are on the journey of overcoming them. I wrote it to celebrate us and to inspire us because we are f*cking powerful! Big yourself up when you play it!”

We caught up with FOURA to chat about the new single, making the perfect mixtape and more. Check out Power below, and read on to learn more about FOURA!

Firstly, congratulations on the release of Power! There’s a compelling energy to the track – can you talk me through the moment where you first had the idea for the song, and how that idea evolved into what we’re hearing now?

As well as being a producer, I’m also a DJ, and my favourite time and place is the early hours in a club. I wanted to make something for that moment - something for the DJs and the dancers.

I’m really into having purpose with how you move through life and in this case I wanted to create a song that was not only fun but empowered people too. I channelled a lot of emotion into it with themes of strength, determination and of course - Power!

The song is a reference to being a woman in dance music – I’d love to know more about the catalyst of the song’s message, and who you’re hoping hears Power?

I wrote this as a celebration of fierce resilience. I wrote it as a thank you to those that fought to make space for womxn in music, those that continue to and those that will in the future.

We still have so far to go in that space within the industry, but I want to take a moment to celebrate us, we are powerful! I hope that everyone that has gone through struggles of all types hears Power and I hope it helps them to hold space to celebrate themselves too! Power is for everyone.

Power is a celebration and a call for people to be the best versions of themselves. What are you currently celebrating in your own life?

Finishing a big ol’ 10-track mixtape!

Both the song and the visualiser have a quite ‘late-night’ vibe to them – what do you feel like will be the right time of the night to drop Power when you’re playing your next set?

    2:30am.

Earlier this year, you dropped a string of remixes, transforming tracks by Tim Shiel/NIK NAVY, Stellie and m8riarchy. I’d love to know more about your mindset when you’re remixing a track by another artist, and how it might differ (if it does) from when you’re creating your own music?

I think the main thing for me is I want to respect the original artist’s work. Music is so personal and such an expression of the inner parts of us, I want to make sure I treat that kindly and keep the essence of the original firmly in the track.

You’re getting ready to release a mixtape soon – what can people expect to hear when that project drops, and how do you think it might surprise people?

I’m really pumped to release this project. It’s a true capture of all the different styles I like to make from downtempo rave and pop, there is a lot on there that people might not be expecting and some exciting collaborations that I can’t wait to share!

For anyone out there reading this, your musical journey started when you curated mixtapes for friends – what do you think are three key elements that make the perfect mixtape/playlist?

    1. Shifts in energy throughout. I think it comes from being a DJ, I love the element of surprise, throwing something unexpected in there and getting swept up in a tangent!

    2. Intro and outro, set the mood and close the story.

    3. Music that you absolutely love, no fillers.

Finally, what are you looking forward to most in 2022?

I’m looking forward to sharing music with people, playing shows and connecting with wonderful people across the country.
