It is nearly impossible to match the iconic image of the Sydney Opera House and it’s sails. But if any other image came close it would be the one above.
Which makes (or made rather sadly) Martin Sharp a very important Australian artist.
For an iconic landmark Sharp’s pop art design is pretty iconoclastic but what could you expect from a man who made his name designing Oz magazine and who created possibly the best piece of Dylan imagery ever with this:
Or who designed the propaganda for underground clubs like UFO at a time when Underground actually meant Underground:
I’m not sure its fair to judge a book by its cover:
But this picture doesn’t surprise me when I’m told this is the creator of this amazing Jimi Hendrix image. Did anyone do a better job of “painting music”?
Or the creator of Cream’s “Disraeli Gears” and the paranoid craziness of this Nimrod Theatre fundraiser:
It’s sad to know that he’s leaving. RIP Martin Sharp 21 January 1942 – 1 December 2013.
