Allday has just dropped one of the more interesting local hip hop joints I’ve heard in a while, and whilst the production is pretty on trend with what’s happening OS at the moment, it’s the first time I’ve heard someone down here pull it off with conviction and authenticity.
Something about his tone in the hook reminds me of Ben Lee… and before you think that’s a diss I’m not talking about the sellout hippy that we all know and hate but the early version of Ben Lee, the one that the Beastie Boys signed to Grand Royal and that had some great solo albums and the Noise Addict stuff and was the dude Bernard Fanning referred to as a precocious little c__t.
Back to Allday, I think that’s what I dig about him the most, not saying he’s a precocious little c-bomb but he definitely looks hella cheeky and far from the typical Aus rap cats we’re used to, he’s nailed the stoner slacker look complete with long hair, nose ring and his trademark beanie and flannies. Kid has steez and it’s his own, which is what I love the most.
Better than all of that though, the dudes tracks feel like actual ‘songs’ as opposed to that usual formula of Australian hip hop that we’ve all been punished with for years, you know the one, people rapping about rapping or nothing at all and then inserting a big sing song chorus and repeating the process over and over and over again.
