The return of Mr Mo’Wax aka James Lavelle programming London’s Meltdown Festival isn’t in itself exciting. That is despite recognising that James has (and always) had very very good taste and this bill is no different. And despite the fact that I kind of think the UNKLE Redux might well turn out to be better than The Avalanches redux at Sydney’s Vivid festival. But who knows?
What is exciting is the fact that it gives me a chance to rave about weirdly intriguing French act Chassol whose album Indiamore has become a little bit of a favourite.
Here’s a bit of the brilliantly titled Music Is God My Love from Indiamore which seems to be a soundtrack based around footage shot in India and is great throughout.
I don’t know much about Chassol because everything is in French but I think he does (did?) arrangements for three brilliant French acts (Sebastian Tellier, Keren Ann and Phoenix) and maybe the rumours say he is doing some beats and ideas for Kanye. But then, who isn’t?
For more proof of his wonderfulness you could try the Prince-like I Looove U Sometimes, from his other album X-Pianos (which, naturally, is about harmonising sounds from real life).
Brilliant left field summery pop.
Or this one Din A Din which weaves a sample into some beautiful piano melodies.
And with Eska on the bill too it’s a night to be genuinely interested in.
Thanks James and great you are back. Now to find the cash for a flight to London…
