We love championing diverse new voices in hip hop and we've uncovered a fresh new Indian-Australian rapper on the scene called Lt. Bil, and we're super excited to premiere his latest new song and music video Told You So this morning on Cool Accidents.
His style is distinctive, bedding cheeky bars atop tinkling organs and horns at the start, with a stark change of pace just after the one minute mark. Directed by Zain Ayub, the video changes at this point too, but just as we're getting into the darker beats, we're back to the swoony summery vibes we started with. It's sonic whiplash in the best way.
"The track draws from that feeling from when Spring first hits and the video takes a lot of inspiration from that time. I wanted to capture that changing of seasons visually and mirror what the track sounds like in the bright colours and haziness, but also bring in a darker contrasting side with my next single Famished," Lt. Bil's Nabil Pala explains.
"We drove all around Sydney scouting spots to shoot then we found a pink bench and thought ‘dope, this is it’.”
We're also loving the nods to his Punjabi heritage throughout the song - lines like "thank you all for waiting and for being so patient / you dealt with all these flavours but masala's your favourite" use humour to point out that we're rarely exposed to hip hop from people of Indian heritage, but Lt. Bil's managed to make it fun.
The song's fire and we're keen to keep an eye on Lt. Bil, and so should you.
