Milwaukee Banks Got Game

One of our favourite new discoveries of the last little bit has to be Australian hip hop/not Australian hip hop duo Milwaukee Banks.

In a scene that is over saturated with cookie cutter rappers that sound exactly like the last guy that triple j played on high rotation, the combination of Edo’s minimal/but not really minimal beats and Dyl Thomas’ razor sharp raps is unlike anything we’ve ever heard coming out of down under. Maybe for once we could lose the ‘Australian’ prefix and just call this hip-hop, BUT the problem/not problem is this isn’t just hip hop, it’s so much more.

Knowing how much the guys love basketball based on all the subtle/not so subtle references in and around their music we thought we’d get them to compare each track off their debut Rose Water EP to an NBA player and here are their picks coupled with each tune for your streaming pleasure.

    1. Pluto Bounce (Spud Webb)

We chose Spud Webb cause he had bounce! That guy had some serious hops in his legs for a dude that was 5’7”.

    2. Sweater Made Of Gold (Michael Jordan)

We chose MJ because he is the GOAT, and because he has the most gold in his trophy cabinet. I ain’t even gonna list all his trophies…

    3. Rose Water (Dominique Wilkins)

As well as been one of the best dunkers of all time, the human highlight reel had rosey cheeks, so he is the pick for Rose Water.

    4. Patty Mills (Patty Mills)

Of course it had to be Patty Mills! We were going nuts watching the NBA finals game 5. He tore it up big time. We just wish he still did his 3 goggles, but he still gets pretty pumped up after nailing a 3!

    5. Purple and Green (Vin Baker)

This song is named after the Milwaukee Bucks logo colours – So we’ve chosen our favourite Buck, Vin Baker.

    6. Hazy (Joakim Noah)

We chose Noah cause he looks like he spends most of the off season getting Hazy…

If you like what you heard above Milwaukee Banks’ Rose Water EP is out through Inertia Access and can be copped digitally NOW and stay plugged into the guys’ social channels for news on upcoming live shows (including Big Sound in September) where you can cop an actual CD.
