The world is in a state of grief right now at the shocking murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was murdered under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer last week.
The video of his death, captured in full on social media, was eye-opening and extremely heartbreaking, but the truth of the matter is that black lives have been oppressed, incarcerated and murdered for decades in the US - and all too often, there is no justice.
Various musicians, including Taylor Swift, Halsey, Jay-Z, Billie Eilish, 6LACK and many more have spoken about the death of George Floyd and all the other black people who have lost their lives, and the wider issues underlying the treatment of people of colour worldwide.
Protests have erupted all over the world, with artists like Ariana Grande, Halsey and Yungblud even posting socials from the frontlines.
After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? ‘When the looting starts the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November. @realdonaldtrump

And fucking listen to the black people speaking. You are not there to speak over them. If they are venting their pain and anguish out loud do not speak over them. Allies are there to help when help is needed. Not take control of the narrative. there’s enough of that already.

I do things every day without fear, because I am privileged, and I am privileged every day because I am white.
Being not racist is not enough, we must be anti racist.
Social change is enacted when a society mobilizes.

hours and miles of peaceful protesting yesterday that got little to no coverage.
all throughout beverly hills and west hollywood we chanted, people beeped and cheered along.
we were passionate, we were loud, we were loving.

Ayo @louisvillemayor @GovAndyBeshear When the fuck are y’all going to arrest and charge Breonna Taylor’s murderers ?!?
Why are Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankinson & Myles Cosgrove still roaming freely & still being payed while y’all try to protect the blood on y’all’s hands?— solange knowles (@solangeknowles) May 31, 2020
This idea of nuance between White people doesn’t exist. We’re either racist or anti-racist. If you’re too busy trying to argue the nuance between those two to speak out or act or donate, you’re the former, and there’s a LOT you can do about it.

We will never truly understand the depth & magnitude of the pain black people have had to endure for years, but we hope we can use our voice and this platform to show our support & solidarity. Black lives matter, indigenous lives matter, and until institutions and systems reflect that, you can’t say “all lives matter”
— Illy (@illyal) June 1, 2020
The #BlackLivesMatter movement began in 2013, with Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi creating a "Black-centered political will and movement building project called #BlackLivesMatter". It was in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman. You can read more about the movement's beginnings here.
It's important to also remember that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia also face disproportionate incarceration rates. Since 1989, the imprisonment rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people has increased 12 times faster than the rate for non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
We here at Cool Accidents do not stand for racism of any kind, and stand with the #BlackLivesMatter movement. We will be observing Black Out Tuesday on June 2nd, 2020. The music business will not go on as usual.
